Overview
Vueko, whose full name is Vueroeruko, is a character from Made in Abyss. A key member of the Ganja suicide squad that journeyed into the depths of the Abyss, she is also recognized as one of the Three Sages who founded the Hollow Village, Ilblu, located in the Sixth Layer. Having been imprisoned deep beneath the village in a location known as the deep pit or Doguup, she is eventually freed by Riko and serves as a vital narrator who reveals the tragic history behind the creation of the village.
Appearance
Vueko features red eyes and hair that combines red and white hues, with the white portion originating from burn scars on her head. Her hair was short during her time with the Ganja squad but grew very long over time. She is depicted with downturned, tired eyes framed by dark circles, often carrying a worried or embarrassed facial expression. Initially found completely unclothed while imprisoned, she later wears clothing obtained through value trade and uniquely uses a multi-legged villager's undergarment as a headpiece to cover her face.
Personality
Due to a traumatic past and severe lingering remorse, Vueko possesses extremely low self-worth and frequently exhibits a self-deprecating attitude. Shy and bashful by nature, she often wears an anxious or embarrassed expression and is known for an awkward laugh. Despite her timid demeanor, she is deeply compassionate and gentle toward others, forming affectionate bonds with vulnerable individuals. However, the guilt of failing to protect those she cared about causes her to harbor intense self-loathing, driving her to extreme despondency.
Abilities
Vueko possesses no special combat abilities or supernatural powers. However, during the initial expedition, she held the Star Compass, which served as the essential guide that directed the Ganja squad toward the depths of the Abyss. Additionally, her sharp memory of the events surrounding the Cradle of Greed and the establishment of the village enables her to pass down the crucial history of the Sixth Layer to later explorers.
Background
Raised under severe abuse by her guardian Juroimoh, Vueko eventually escaped after obtaining the Star Compass that he had boasted about. Seeking the Golden City, she joined Wazukyan's Ganja suicide squad and set sail into the Abyss. Upon reaching the Sixth Layer, the team faced extinction due to a deadly water-borne parasite, leading to Irumyuui's transformation into the foundation of the village via the Cradle of Greed. Crushed by guilt, Vueko attempted to end her life but was stopped and imprisoned in the village's depths for centuries. After being freed by Riko, she ultimately succumbed to the curse of the Sixth Layer following the destruction of the village.
Relationships
Vueko suffered severe abuse from her former guardian, Juroimoh. During the expedition, she met the native girl Irumyuui, forming an intensely close, loving bond born of shared suffering. She served alongside Wazukyan and Belaf as one of the Three Sages, though she harbored deep conflict over Wazukyan's ruthless decisions for the team's survival. She also maintained an intimate relationship with her squadmate Pakkoyan. Later, she developed a connection with Riko, who freed her from captivity, and spent her final moments witnessed by Faputa, the final child of Irumyuui.
Trivia
When first introduced in the narrative, Vueko was presented entirely unclad while tied up in the depths of the village. The unusual hat she wears after her rescue is actually a piece of undergarment originally belonging to a multi-legged creature of the village. Within the story, she is shown sharing blankets with female squadmates and also displays subtle reactions toward Reg.
