Overview
Nat is a supporting character from the manga and anime series Made in Abyss, created by Akihito Tsukushi. Residing at the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth, which surrounds the giant chasm known as the Abyss, he is a young novice Cave Raider designated by a Red Whistle. Within the story, he serves as a close companion to Riko and Reg, playing a key role during the initial stages of their journey.
Appearance
Nat is a young boy featuring short brown hair, prominent thick eyebrows, and purple eyes. As a novice Cave Raider, he wears a red whistle suspended around his neck. His typical attire includes a hat, a blue shirt, and a pair of shorts.
Personality
Nat exhibits a classic young boy's temperament—somewhat headstrong and unable to openly express his genuine affection, which leads to a bickering yet close friendship with Riko. Beneath this blunt exterior lies a caring and responsible nature, demonstrated by how he acts as a dependable big-brother figure toward Reg after his arrival at the orphanage. Deeply loyal, he harbors a strong sense of concern for the safety of those he holds dear.
Abilities
As a Red Whistle cave raider, Nat is trained in basic exploration and relic collection within the upper levels of the Abyss, such as depths around 130 meters. Additionally, having grown up in the Wharf District of southern Orth, he possesses keen geographical knowledge of the local terrain, including hidden paths suitable for slipping into the Abyss.
Background
Nat originated from the impoverished Wharf District in southern Orth, where he previously lived with his now-deceased older sister. Left alone after her passing, he was taken in by the Belchero Orphanage. Despite experiencing the hazards of the Abyss—such as a terrifying encounter with a Crimson Splitjaw—he continued his daily life as an orphan. When Riko decided to embark on her irreversible journey into the depths, Nat strongly opposed the reckless plan out of fear for her life. However, respecting her resolve, he ultimately guided Riko and Reg to an ideal diving location in his old hometown before saying goodbye.
Relationships
Nat maintains a close bickering friendship with Riko, concealing a subtle crush behind his contentious attitude. To Reg, he acts as an attentive senior mentor, welcoming him warmly into the orphanage. He also shares a close camaraderie with Shiggy and the other orphans at Belchero. In his past, he had an older sister who passed away prior to his arrival at the orphanage.
Trivia
Nat aspires to eventually reach the rank of Moon Whistle so that he can accomplish his long-term goal of founding a new orphanage in his hometown of the Wharf District.
