Overview
Jiruo is a supporting character from Tsukushi Akihito's manga series Made in Abyss. Known primarily to the orphans under his care as Leader, he works as an instructor and senior Moon Whistle cave raider at Belchero Orphanage. Having studied as a pupil under the legendary White Whistle Lyza, he carries out a long-standing promise to watch over her daughter, Riko, following Lyza's departure into the Abyss.
Appearance
Jiruo features short grey or white hair with strands hanging between his eyes, complemented by blue or purple eyes. He is depicted in standard cave raider gear and carries a purple Moon Whistle denoting his raider rank.
Personality
Jiruo is a serious and responsible instructor who maintains strict order over the orphans, frequently chastising unruly behavior. Despite his stern demeanor, he is exceptionally observant and compassionate. When he uncovers secrets or rule-breaking among his students, he exercises subtle understanding and quietly aids them in secret rather than acting strictly out of malice.
Abilities
Holding the rank of Moon Whistle, Jiruo is a highly accomplished cave raider. His expertise enables him to lead and train the young orphans in deep-cave exploration techniques. His capabilities were recognized by elite White Whistles early in his career.
Background
Jiruo began his raider career as a Red Whistle under the tutelage of Lyza. Years prior, Lyza entrusted the upbringing of her infant daughter Riko to him before her final descent. Due to his talent, he was once offered an apprenticeship by the White Whistle Ozen, though he declined out of loyalty to Lyza. When he anticipates Riko and Reg's illegal descent into the Abyss, he subtly assists them by providing a copy of Lyza's secret document and testing their resolve before they depart.
Relationships
Jiruo holds profound respect for his mentor, Lyza, and faithfully fulfills his oath to care for her daughter, Riko. While he acts as a stern father figure to Riko and the other orphans at Belchero, he deeply cares for her well-being. He also crossed paths with the White Whistle Ozen, who held his skills in high regard enough to offer him a position as her apprentice.
Trivia
According to creator commentary, Jiruo was considered quite cute in his childhood before growing into his current dignified, authoritative presence.
