Overview
Mitty is a character from the manga series Made in Abyss by Akihito Tsukushi and its anime adaptation. She is a Hollow, a creature transformed by the ascension load of the Abyss's sixth layer, which resulted in the loss of her human appearance and rationality. She lives together with Nanachi in a secret hideout on the fourth layer.
Appearance
As a human, Mitty had reddish-gold hair and eyes, and wore revealing clothing. After her transformation into a Hollow, her body became an amorphous, fleshy shape covered in pink fur, featuring two cat-like ears on her head and clawed hands. Her mouth is split, and her left eye is missing, though her remaining eye still retains traces of her human self. A replica created later in the series retains both of her eyes.
Personality
Before her transformation, Mitty was a cheerful and lively girl who dreamed of becoming a White Whistle. She took the initiative to reach out to the unsociable Nanachi, quickly forming a close bond. As a Hollow, she lost her reasoning and speech capabilities, responding only with faint cries. Despite this, she still feels pain and sheds tears when harmed, and demonstrates gentle affection, such as leaning close to Riko.
Abilities
Following her transformation into a Hollow, Mitty acquired immortality and extraordinary regenerative capabilities, allowing her limbs and organs to restore themselves after severe destruction. However, her left eye could not regenerate after being damaged by Bondrewd's Sparagmos. She also does not require food to survive.
Background
Brought to the Abyss as an orphan by Bondrewd, Mitty befriended Nanachi before being forced into an ascension load experiment. She absorbed extra curses to protect Nanachi, which turned her into a Hollow. Subjected to harsh regenerative experiments by Bondrewd, she was eventually rescued by Nanachi, who hid her in the fourth layer. Seeking to end Mitty's suffering, Nanachi asked Reg to use his Incinerator to release her. Later, an exact copy of Mitty with a replicated soul was created by the Sage Belaf using the power of the Hollow Village.
Relationships
Nanachi is Mitty's cherished companion and closest friend, whom Mitty risked her life to shield. Bondrewd treated Mitty purely as an experimental subject for his research. Reg ended her physical life using his Incinerator at Nanachi's desperate request. Belaf, one of the Three Sages, was obsessed with her immortality and created a perfect replica of her within the Hollow Village.
Trivia
Illustrations of Mitty in an alternate beast-like form as well as full-color designs have appeared on manga volume covers and bonus artwork. Additionally, guest artists contributed end-card artwork depicting her for the anime adaptation.
