Overview

Meinya is a small creature from the series Made in Abyss. Officially named Meinastilim, which translates to Child of Change, it originally served as a beloved companion to Prushka after being presented to her by Bondrewd. Following key events in the story, Meinya joins Riko and her group on their journey deeper into the Abyss.

Appearance

Meinya is a rabbit-sized creature with a soft, oval-shaped body and short limbs. It possesses large, wing-like ears used for flight and a face reminiscent of a toad with red eyes featuring horizontal slit pupils. It emits a distinctive sound.

Personality

Although the full extent of its intelligence remains unclear, Meinya demonstrates deep affection and attachment toward those who care for it. It readily adapts to humans and behaves as a gentle, loyal companion to the travel party.

Abilities

Meinya possesses extraordinary sensory capabilities, allowing it to perceive the invisible forcefield of the Abyss. By inhaling Meinya's scent, explorers are able to sense the flow of the forcefield and partially mitigate the deadly strains of ascension in the Fifth Layer.

Background

Meinya was originally given to Prushka by Bondrewd as a gift for her tenth birthday at Ido Front. After the conflict in the Fifth Layer, it chose to accompany Riko, Reg, and Nanachi into the Sixth Layer. Later observations by the White Whistle Slaajo suggest that Meinya may be a byproduct of artificial Beast-phase experiments, formed by mixing small animal embryos rather than having a purely human base.

Relationships

Meinya shared a powerful bond of affection with its original owner, Prushka, who cherished it deeply. After parting from her, it joined Riko, Reg, and Nanachi, providing vital assistance to the party on their descent. It was originally brought to Prushka by Bondrewd.

Trivia

The full name Meinastilim translates to Child of Change in the lore of the series. Fan speculation long associated the creature with a human child named Irim used in Bondrewd's experiments, though later story details suggest its physical foundation is not primarily human.
