Overview
Akane Sawatari is a character in Chainsaw Man who formerly worked as a civilian Devil Hunter. Serving as a primary antagonist in the series, she targets Denji's heart and coordinates with a yakuza group led by Katana Man. Utilizing her formidable combat tactics and keen analytical skills, she orchestrates a widespread assault against the Public Safety Special Division units.
Appearance
Akane Sawatari has short blonde hair with dark roots and sharp red eyes featuring slit, reptilian pupils. She has a youthful, slightly lower-statured build with a somewhat fierce facial expression, and she wears an oversized red hoodie. Her height is listed as 165 centimeters including shoe soles. Later in the story, her corpse is shown clad in a Public Safety uniform.
Personality
She possesses a composed and calculating demeanor, often keeping hot-headed allies in check to execute plans methodically. Her sharp observation skills allow her to assess opponents' capabilities quickly during battle. Despite her usual self-possession, she is prone to visible panic and slow reaction times when confronted with completely unexpected situations.
Abilities
She commands the power of the Snake Devil by forming a snake-like hand gesture and vocalizing specific commands, exchanging her own fingernails as payment for its strikes. Her techniques include swallowing targets whole—effectively neutralizing intangible threats—and delivering heavy physical strikes with the devil's massive tail. Additionally, she can regurgitate defeated devils to manipulate them freely without establishing a new contract, though powerful moves can cause her to bleed from the nose. She also demonstrates keen tactical insight, discerning enemy powers at a glance.
Background
After leaving civilian Devil Hunting, she acted as a broker for the Gun Devil, supplying firearms to the yakuza and transforming their leader into Katana Man. She orchestrated ambushes against Public Safety divisions and revived fallen allies during battle. After her hideout was breached, she was captured, but a pre-arranged failsafe contract triggered upon her restraint, causing her own Snake Devil to sever her head. Her body was subsequently manipulated by Makima's control abilities to utilize her contract in a later conflict.
Relationships
She works alongside Katana Man, serving as the tactical partner who guides his revenge against Denji. She acts as a dangerous adversary to Public Safety hunters like Aki Hayakawa and Himeno, overwhelming them in battle, but is ultimately outmaneuvered by Kobeni Higashiyama. She exhibits prior awareness of Makima's terrifying abilities, and after her death, her body is brought under Makima's absolute control.
Trivia
Her full backstory and true motives for targeting Denji's heart remain largely unexplained in the series, prompting widespread fan theories regarding her connections to foreign powers and her possession of Gun Devil flesh. Her distinct character design earned her a strong following, which surged internationally following her appearances in the anime adaptation.
