Overview

Makima is a central character in Chainsaw Man. She is a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter directly under the Cabinet Chief Secretary and serves as the leader of Tokyo Special Division 4. After encountering the protagonist Denji, she recruits him into Public Safety, becoming the direct superior to him, Aki Hayakawa, and Power. Presenting a calm and composed demeanor, she holds absolute authority within her unit and possesses a mysterious, unyielding drive to accomplish her goals regardless of the means required.

Appearance

She is a woman with long red hair styled in a single braided ponytail at the back, and distinctive yellow eyes with concentric ring patterns. On duty, she wears a white long-sleeved collared shirt with a black necktie and trousers, often layered with a long black coat. In her personal time on days off, she dressed in casual attire.

Personality

On the surface, Makima maintains a gentle, soft-spoken, and polite demeanor toward her subordinates and colleagues. Beneath this calm exterior lies a deeply calculating and controlling nature. She views subordinates as dogs expected to obey completely, using subtle affection and ruthless threats to manipulate those around her. Despite her ruthlessness in achieving her aims, she is an avid film enthusiast who frequents multiple movie theaters on her days off, though her cinematic taste diverges from average viewers, rarely finding films she genuinely enjoys.

Abilities

Despite not holding a contract with any devil, she possesses exceptional combat capabilities as a Devil Hunter. She displays astounding resilience, recovering within a short time even after being shot with a firearm. Her powers include inflicting internal bleeding, unconsciousness, or death on a target simply by glaring at them, as well as remotely crushing distant targets to death by manipulating human sacrifices to recite names alongside specific hand gestures.

Background

Makima first encountered Denji following the battle against the Zombie Devil and brought him into Public Safety Special Division 4. She gradually built a fulfilling life for Denji by providing him with employment, a home, and close bonds with Aki Hayakawa and Power. However, her true intention was to break the contract formed between Denji and Pochita. By allowing Denji to experience a normal, happy life alongside his newfound family, she set the stage to systematically strip those precious bonds away, intending to plunge him into utter despair.

Relationships

She serves as the superior to Denji, Aki Hayakawa, and Power. Denji holds an intense infatuation and romantic admiration toward her, while Power views her with deep terror. Seasoned hunters such as Kishibe and Himeno remain highly suspicious and wary of her true nature and motives.

Trivia

Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto revealed that removing the syllable 'ki' (meaning tree or wood in Japanese) from her name leaves 'Mama,' reflecting how Denji unconsciously seeks maternal affection in her alongside romantic attraction.
