Overview
The Violence Fiend, whose true name is Galgali, is a Public Safety Devil Hunter serving in Special Division 4 in the manga series Chainsaw Man. Despite bearing an intimidating moniker associated with brutality, he is an exceptionally peaceful and rational individual. Unlike typical fiends who act purely on primitive urges, he retains a strong sense of empathy, showing genuine compassion toward humans and acting as a protective, considerate partner to his fellow hunter Kobeni Higashiyama.
Appearance
He wears a dark hooded coat over a formal uniform. His most striking feature is a unique mask covering his face—combining the upper design of a gas mask with the lower shape of a plague doctor mask—which continuously leaks poisonous gas. When this restraint is removed, his true countenance is revealed: a muscular physique, spiky dark hair, and a face featuring four blank, featureless eye sockets.
Personality
Despite representing the concept of violence, he actively disdains conflict and promotes peace. Because a significant portion of his human brain remains intact, he is highly rational and clever, willing to choose tactical retreats rather than recklessly fighting impossible battles. Although he speaks in a relaxed, casual tone, he is deeply considerate and polite, promptly apologizing for accidental missteps and buying soft-serve ice cream to comfort his anxious partner, Kobeni Higashiyama.
Abilities
Despite the natural weakening that comes with becoming a fiend, his raw combat strength remains extraordinarily immense, requiring him to constantly wear a poison-emitting mask to suppress his power. His fighting style relies on bare-handed martial arts and heavy kicks, temporarily enlarging his limbs to strike with destructive physical force. He frequently utilizes an enlarged axe kick to crush opponents and demonstrates tremendous physical tenacity, continuing to attack even after sustaining fatal wounds.
Background
He originated when the Violence Devil took over a human body. Although he has no recollection of his host's death, he remembers being rescued by Makima as well as ordinary human memories such as his former school and a favorite restaurant. Assigned to Public Safety Special Division 4, he completed various missions alongside his partner, Kobeni Higashiyama. When trapped in Hell, he faced the overwhelming Darkness Devil and requested Kobeni to remove his mask, valiantly fighting until his death. Makima later identified his true identity as Galgali, one of Chainsaw Man's ancient followers.
Relationships
He acts as a protective buddy to Kobeni Higashiyama, constantly comforting her during panics and treating her with great gentleness. He rescued Aki Hayakawa from a deadly explosive attack by Reze, earning Aki's profound gratitude and respect. He retains positive memories of Makima, remembering her as the one who saved him. Additionally, his facial appearance beneath the mask bears a striking resemblance to Kobeni's deceased former partner, the Devil Hunter Hirokazu Arai.
Trivia
His true name, Galgali, is derived from Galgalim, the Hebrew term for the Thrones within angelic hierarchy, reflecting his status among Chainsaw Man's followers. Due to his unmasked facial traits and hair matching those of Hirokazu Arai, fans widely speculate that the Violence Devil may have possessed Arai's corpse after his death.
