Overview
Mitaka Asa is one of the main protagonists of Part 2 of Chainsaw Man. A student attending Fourth East High School, she lost her parents to a devil in her past. Due to her stubborn, inflexible nature and awkward social demeanor, she initially isolates herself from her classmates. Beneath her distant exterior, however, she is conscientious, delicate, and deeply longs for genuine friendship and romance. After being fatally injured in an attack, she merges with the War Devil, forcing the two to share a single body while navigating school life and dangerous devil-hunting conflicts.
Appearance
Asa features prominent, thick eyebrows and semi-long black hair that falls past her shoulders, which she typically wears tied in low twintails. In childhood flashbacks, her hair was styled in a short cut reaching her ears. Her standard attire is the Fourth East High School uniform, consisting of a white collared shirt with a neck ribbon underneath a sleeveless pinafore dress. When the War Devil takes control of her body, distinct facial scars appear across her face, and her eyes change to a ringed pattern.
Personality
Asa maintains a scowling, blunt demeanour, harboring feelings of envy and resentment toward her livelier peers. She possesses an inflexible pride, frequently airing her knowledge to assert superiority, yet her social skills drop drastically in romantic situations. Despite her arrogant streak, she is deeply law-abiding, refusing to violate rules like crossing on a red light. Asa is fully aware of her tendency to clumsily ruin crucial moments, leaving her sensitive and prone to bouts of insecurity. Her awkward attempts to connect with others make her both prideful and tragically comedic.
Abilities
By sharing her body with the War Devil, Asa gains the capability to transform anything she perceives as her own property into a weapon. Although she lacks combat experience, her intense feelings of guilt naturally amplify the power of her creations, making her guilt-fueled armaments exceptionally destructive. Her creations include the Uniform Strong Sword forged from her mother's gift, the Aquarium Spear created after technically purchasing the building, the Super Chainsaw Man Motorcycle, and the Room 606 Sword. However, these highly powerful weapons tend to break or disappear after a single use, and the transformation process leaves her open to attack.
Background
After her parents were killed by a devil during her childhood, Asa grew up living alone. Her solitary upbringing was further marked by the tragic loss of her pet cat, Crambon. At school, she remained an outcast until a brief moment of connection through the Chicken Devil, Bucky (Kokepi), ended in disaster when she accidentally tripped and killed it. Later that evening, she was ambushed and killed by her class president, who had contracted with a devil. As her life ebbed away, the War Devil seized her body to save her, reviving her in exchange for sharing her physical form. Bound to the devil's demand to defeat Chainsaw Man, Asa is forced into joining the school's Devil Hunter Club.
Relationships
Asa shares a complex, co-dependent relationship with the War Devil (Yoru), with whom she constantly bickers while vying for control of their shared body. Through her attempts to join the Devil Hunter Club, she formed her first real bond of friendship with Yuko. Her interactions with Yoshida Hirofumi often result in her misreading his intentions due to her romantic naivety. Regarding Denji, she initially expressed strong dislike toward Chainsaw Man, but after spending time with him during an aquarium date and shared battles, her feelings evolve into a nuanced dynamic—unaware that Denji himself is the very hero she aimed to despise.
Trivia
The weapons created by Asa and Yoru are notable for their hilariously literal and blunt naming scheme. While she is intellectually capable—demonstrated by her memorizing vast amounts of marine biology facts at the library for a date—her effort is often misguided. She considers herself merely decently cute, though media in her world has acknowledged her as a genuinely attractive high school student. Her tendency to fall easily for anyone showing a slight hint of understanding has led fans to fondly view her as a female counterpart to Denji.
