Beam

Overview

Beam, also known as the Shark Fiend, is a character from the manga series Chainsaw Man. He is a Devil Hunter belonging to Public Safety Special Division 4, created when the Shark Devil possessed a human corpse. During a period when Power was unavailable, Beam served as Denji's temporary partner, showing fanatical devotion to him as Chainsaw Man.

Appearance

Beam's upper head is mutated into the shape of a shark head and dorsal fin, obscuring his eyes in his standard appearance. He has black hair and walks around bare-chested, wearing only a pair of shorts instead of the standard Public Safety suit.

Personality

While typically violent and feral, Beam exhibits an exceptionally energetic and lightweight personality. He fervently idolizes Denji, addressing him reverently and obeying his commands without question. Rain tends to make him unusually excited, causing him to act out out of joy.

Abilities

Beam possesses the ability to swim through solid obstacles such as walls and the ground as if they were water, leaving his dorsal fin visible on the surface. For brief periods, he can partially or fully transform into the true Shark Devil—a creature with six eyes and four pectoral fins. He also displays extraordinary physical durability, enduring heavy barrage attacks during combat.

Background

Assigned as Denji's temporary partner while Power underwent blood draining, Beam assisted Denji in battles against Reze and the Typhoon Devil. Later, during the invasion of international assassins, Makima ordered him to assist Denji. He was dragged to Hell by the Hell Devil summoned by Santa Claus, where he offered his own blood to revive Denji before being dismembered and killed by the Darkness Devil.

Relationships

Beam holds Denji in absolute reverence, constantly referring to him with deep respect and assisting him unconditionally. He remains obedient to Makima, keeping sensitive information hidden on her orders. Within Public Safety Special Division 4, he fought alongside fellow non-human members including the Violence Fiend, the Angel Devil, and the Spider Devil.

Trivia

Unlike most Fiends, Beam retains memories from his previous life as a devil, including familiarity with Pochita. His name is believed to derive from Cherubim, the second rank of angels. A self-referential homage featuring a shark-headed man in shorts appears in a fictional manga within Tatsuki Fujimoto's one-shot Look Back.
