Overview

Reze is a primary character appearing in Chainsaw Man and its film adaptation Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc. She initially introduces herself as a charming young woman working at the café Futamichi after meeting Denji on a rainy day. In truth, she is a Soviet spy sent to steal the heart of the Chainsaw Man, as well as a hybrid entity merged with the Bomb Devil. Combining captivating warmth with lethal combat capabilities, she serves as both a central antagonist and a tragic romantic figure in Denji's life.

Appearance

Reze has dark purple hair tied behind her head, pale skin with distinctively flushed cheeks, and bright green eyes shaped with an upward curve. She has a slender build and is shorter in height compared to Makima and Power. Her signature outfit consists of a sleeveless white collared shirt, black shorts with side slits, and high socks. Around her neck, she wears a thick collar piece equipped with a ring-shaped pin on the right side, which is integrated directly into her skin.

Personality

On the surface, Reze displays an innocent, cheerful, and approachable demeanor, frequently smiling and showing affectionate warmth toward Denji. She occasionally reveals a calm, mature, and mysterious side, interacting playfully and effortlessly even with crude humor. During combat, she acts with cold rationality and lethality, yet she expresses a preference to minimize unnecessary killing when possible. Beneath her trained spy instincts lies an inner conflict, torn between her assigned directive and her genuine, growing romantic attachment to Denji.

Abilities

As a hybrid merged with the Bomb Devil, Reze possesses an immortal body and the ability to transform into the Bomb Devil. Pulling the ring pin located on her neck triggers her transformation, enabling her to create devastating explosions and employ diverse combat techniques. Her overwhelming battle skills allow her to defeat multiple Devil Hunters with ease. However, being submerged in water serves as a key vulnerability that hinders her explosive powers. In cross-over media such as #COMPASS, she is depicted as a high-damage ranged attacker utilizing explosive ordinance.

Background

Reze was raised in the Soviet Union as part of a military experiment involving homeless children, trained from youth to become a lethal spy and assassin. Operating under government orders to claim the heart of the Chainsaw Man, she traveled to Japan and took a job at the café Futamichi. After meeting Denji in a telephone booth during a rainstorm, she built a close bond with him through nocturnal outings and festival dates. When Denji declined her invitation to abandon his work and flee together, she revealed her true identity and initiated a violent confrontation. Although her mission ultimately failed after a battle near the ocean, Denji asked to meet her again at the café. Choosing her feelings over her duty, she attempted to return to him, but was intercepted and mortally wounded in an ambush by Makima and the Angel Devil.

Relationships

Her connection with Denji begins as a covert operation, but evolves into genuine romantic affection that leads her to attempt abandoning her mission. The manager of the café Futamichi held a high opinion of her charming personality. Conversely, she stands opposed to Public Safety forces, particularly Makima and the Angel Devil. In her final moments, the Angel Devil ambushes her, severing her arm to prevent transformation and piercing her heart on Makima's command, preventing her reunion with Denji.

Trivia

The story arc centered on Reze takes creative inspiration from the animated film JIN-ROH, while her explosive abilities were modeled after the character Nanami Agawa. She achieved 1st place in an official popularity poll, and her tragic fate led to the coining of the term Rezeloss among fans to express grief over her story. The red gerbera flower she holds near the end carries flower language associated with passion and taking a new step forward, reflecting her final emotional choice.
