Overview

The Future Devil is a character from Chainsaw Man who embodies the collective human fear of the future. Maintained in an underground facility by Public Safety, it is regarded as a remarkably powerful devil used for contracts. Despite its eccentric and highly energetic behavior, it possesses a sinister nature centered around an insatiable desire to witness human tragedy.

Appearance

It has a physical form resembling a blend of a muscular male torso and a tree, supported by a single leg. Its head features six eyes distorted into a perpetual grin, which usually remain squinted. Its torso has a large hollow in the abdominal region that contains a single giant eye. It frequently holds its body in a T-pose posture.

Personality

Despite its intimidating visual presence, it is boisterous and hyperactive, frequently striking poses and dancing. It continuously repeats a catchphrase praising the glory of the future and demands that prospective contractors chant it along with it. While appearing outwardly friendly toward humans, its underlying disposition is intensely sadistic, deriving pleasure from seeing people meet horrific fates. It adjusts contract costs based on how tragic a person's future will be, offering remarkably cheap terms if it foresees an especially catastrophic end.

Abilities

It possesses the power of precognition. By having a person insert their head into the hollow of its abdomen, its central abdominal eye can view the individual's entire life story to determine contract terms. When contracting, it grants the ability to see seconds into the future, enabling the contractor to anticipate enemy attacks, dodge surprise strikes from blind spots, and foresee imminent hazards. The practical utility of this power depends heavily on the contractor's physical reflexes and decision-making skills. It can also project visions of the future into a contractor's mind against their will.

Background

Confined in Public Safety's underground holding area, it was introduced to the devil hunter Aki Hayakawa by his mentors Kurose and Tendo after Aki lost his previous devil contracts. Upon foreseeing that Aki would die the worst possible death, it eagerly formed a contract requiring only to reside inside Aki's right eye so it could witness his demise. It assisted Aki in battle through precognitive visions while maliciously showing him distressing future events. After observing Aki's end, it remained in Public Safety custody and was later contracted with thirty death row inmates to verify the Nostradamus predictions, successfully foreseeing the deaths of twenty-three inmates in July 1999.

Relationships

It formed a contract with Aki Hayakawa by taking up residence in his right eye, seeking a front-row seat to his gruesome fate. Public Safety devil hunters Kurose and Tendo facilitated its initial meeting with Aki. In later events, Hirofumi Yoshida and Fami discuss how Public Safety utilized the Future Devil's precognitive abilities with death row convicts to confirm the validity of the apocalyptic Nostradamus prophecy.

Trivia

According to the author's posts on Twitter, the visual concept for the character was inspired in part by a scarecrow. In an official character popularity poll, it achieved 21st place. The catchphrase associated with the character frequently trended on social media platforms following major anime and manga announcements.
