Overview

Pochita is a prominent character in Chainsaw Man, serving as the trusted companion to the protagonist, Denji. Despite possessing a tiny, orange dog-like form during peaceful times, he is secretly the formidable Chainsaw Devil. Communicating primarily through subtle barks and noises, he acts as both a faithful friend to Denji and the central dynamic of the entire story.

Appearance

Pochita naturally takes the form of a small orange dog. A functional chainsaw blade extends directly from his face, and handles reminiscent of power tools grow from his back and rear. His tail resembles a mechanical starter pull-cord. In his fully awakened, true form, he manifests as a hulking, black demonic figure featuring four arms with chainsaws, horns protruding from his head, and his own intestines wrapped around his neck like a scarf.

Personality

Pochita displays a profoundly gentle, loyal, and self-sacrificing disposition toward Denji. He delights in listening to Denji share his simple life aspirations and values their shared friendship above all else. Though he communicates predominantly through childlike barks, his deeper nature as a devil contains a chaotic sense of duty, compelling him to answer cries for help even if it results in violence toward those involved.

Abilities

Pochita can utilize the chainsaw blades integrated into his body for devastating slashing attacks, which are activated by pulling his starter cord tail. His most extraordinary power is conceptual erasure: any devil he consumes has its absolute name, concept, and memory eradicated from reality. Furthermore, he possesses remarkable regenerative capabilities, allowing him to instantly recover from fatal wounds by drinking blood.

Background

Originally known in Hell as the Hero of Hell, Pochita fought numerous powerful devils until he was gravely injured and fled to the human realm. There, he met the young Denji, who saved his life by offering his own blood. The two formed a pact and worked together as devil hunters to clear debts. After both were betrayed and killed by the Zombie Devil, Pochita merged with Denji to become his heart under a contract that requested Denji live out his dreams.

Relationships

Denji is Pochita's cherished companion, for whom he willingly became a living heart. Makima, the Control Devil, harbors an obsessive admiration for Pochita's true form, though Pochita inwardly sympathizes with her desire for equal connection. Various other devils and followers view him with a mixture of terror, reverence, or deep-seated resentment due to his terrifying power.

Trivia

Pochita's name blends 'Pochi,' a traditional Japanese generic name for dogs, with a humanizing suffix. Author Tatsuki Fujimoto features him in bonus chapter illustrations mimicking scenes from the story, cementing his status as the series mascot. Notably, a real-world prehistoric sawfish fossil was scientifically named after Pochita in tribute to the character.
