Overview

A major antagonist featured in the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man. Initially operating under the guise of an elderly male German Devil Hunter, her true identity is a female assassin from the Soviet Union known as Tolka's Master. She travels to Japan to assassinate Denji and claim his heart, and is regarded by senior Public Safety Devil Hunters as an exceptionally dangerous threat.

Appearance

She initially poses as a short, balding elderly man with facial hair, though her actual body is that of a human woman. The standard puppets created by her power exhibit unnatural traits such as eyebrowless round eyes, ventriloquist-dummy mouths, ball joints, and limbs that alter into blades. She also maintains perfect dolls that look entirely human. After ingesting a piece of the Darkness Devil, her physical form transforms into a doll-like entity that alters further in deep darkness.

Personality

Utterly cold, calculating, and ruthless, she hides her motives behind a warm, maternal persona toward her apprentice, Tolka. However, this displays of affection are merely a deceptive ploy to instill emotions such as reverence and guilt in him, preparing him to become a perfect doll. She treats all lives, including those of her custom puppets and adopted children, as mere disposable tools to accomplish her goals.

Abilities

Contracted with the Doll Devil, she transforms humans into mindless puppets upon touch, spreading the condition exponentially. While living devil hybrids and fiends are immune to direct touch, she can sacrifice her dolls' lives to contract with other devils at zero personal cost. Using this method, she paid with the lives of her old man puppet and adopted children to summon the Hell Devil's colossal hand and banish everyone in a department store to Hell. She can also combat targets using the Curse Devil's nails. Upon ingesting a piece of the Darkness Devil's flesh, her capabilities expand dramatically, granting her rapid regeneration in dark environments and the ability to distribute physical pain and mental trauma across a connected neural network of her puppets.

Background

Operating out of Russia, she spent years raising Tolka in isolation while training him to kill humans and devils. Accepting a contract to assassinate Denji, she traveled to Japan while operating through her puppet persona of an elderly German hunter. During a clash in a department store, she completed Tolka's puppet conversion and sacrificed her old man proxy and adopted children to trigger the Hell Devil, dragging the combatants to Hell. There, she struck a bargain with the Darkness Devil to acquire the power necessary to defeat Makima.

Relationships

She acts as a mentor and parental guardian to her apprentice Tolka, though her true intent is solely to craft him into a flawless doll. She targets Denji to claim his Chainsaw heart and views Makima of Public Safety as an enemy to be destroyed. Experienced Devil Hunters like Kishibe and Tamaki strongly feared her lethality and potential devil contracts.

Trivia

The name of her apprentice, Tolka, stems from the Russian word 'Tol'ko' (meaning 'only' or 'just that'), signaling his role as nothing more than a temporary tool. Fans and readers frequently discuss her true nature, as story details leave open whether she is the Doll Devil itself, a human contractor, or a fused hybrid entity.
