Overview
Denji is the protagonist of Chainsaw Man. Originally an impoverished boy crushed by his deceased father's immense debt to the yakuza, he worked as an unofficial Devil Hunter under brutal conditions. After being betrayed and killed, he revived by forming a contract with his companion Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, who became his heart and granted him the power to transform into the Chainsaw Devil. Subsequently recruited into Public Safety, he navigates violent battles while driven by simple, unvarnished personal desires.
Appearance
Denji features dull blond hair, jagged teeth, and small pupils with prominent sclera. A starter rope hangs from his chest. Having previously sold his right eye, he initially wore an eyepatch, which was removed after merging with Pochita restored his body. He wears a white shirt with a black necktie during his time at Public Safety and transitions to a high school uniform in Part 2. When transformed, his head becomes an orange-plated chainsaw with sharp fangs, and chainsaw blades protrude from both forearms.
Personality
Having raised himself in extreme poverty without formal schooling, Denji lacks conventional social manners, yet retains a simple and straightforward personality. He operates with transparent honesty regarding his physical and sexual desires, unhesitatingly compromising his pride for tiny sums of money or minor goals. He avoids deep or philosophical thinking, frequently abandoning complex dilemmas. Despite his crude demeanor and lack of sympathy for strangers, his unpredictable logic allows him to solve dire situations, though he remains exceptionally naive and gullible around women.
Abilities
By pulling the starter cord on his chest, Denji transforms into his devil form, wielding violent close-combat slashes with the chainsaws on his head and arms. His hybrid body grants him functional immortality, allowing him to recover from dismemberment and fatal injuries by consuming blood. Even in human form, he exhibits sufficient physical prowess to subdue a group of armed opponents. In combat, he frequently employs bizarre tactics, such as slicing his own brain to negate mental attacks or leveraging an enemy's inherent mechanisms to his advantage.
Background
After losing his father at a young age, Denji survived by selling his organs and hunting devils with Pochita to satisfy a yakuza debt. Betrayed and killed by yakuza controlled by the Zombie Devil, he was resurrected when Pochita merged into his chest as his heart. Taken in by Makima, he joined Public Safety's Special Division 4 and formed a close bond while living with Aki Hayakawa and Power. Later, he attends Fourth East High School, managing odd jobs like selling recycled cigarette butts to pay for Nayuta's future education while balancing high school life and ongoing devil hunting.
Relationships
Denji holds deep affection and devotion toward Makima, who brought him into Public Safety. Through shared living arrangements, he developed profound bonds with his senior Aki Hayakawa and his partner Power. His bond with Pochita serves as the foundation of his second life. In Part 2, he lives with and cares for Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil, acting as her family. He also forms a complicated acquaintance with fellow student Asa Mitaka, while being closely monitored by Hirofumi Yoshida, a Public Safety agent tasked with restricting his transformations.
Trivia

In official character popularity polls, he ranked 5th in the first poll and 4th in both the second and third polls.
