Erwin Smith

Overview

Erwin Smith is a character in Attack on Titan who serves as the 13th Commander of the Survey Corps. Renowned for his extraordinary strategic intellect and decisive leadership, he commands deep respect from his subordinates despite his willingness to make ruthless sacrifices for the survival of humanity. While outwardly acting as a calm and fearless commander dedicated to saving mankind, he is driven by a personal obsession to uncover the hidden truth of the world.

Appearance

Erwin is a tall, well-built man with neatly styled blonde hair, blue eyes, a prominent nose bridge, and noticeably thick eyebrows. He wears the standard Survey Corps uniform paired with a green cloak and a bolo tie around his collar. He carries Omni-Directional Mobility Gear along with blades. Later in the story, he loses his right arm during a battle, remaining one-armed thereafter.

Personality

Erwin is stoic and composed, rarely letting his emotions surface except around his closest confidants, with whom he drops his rigid commander persona. He is capable of making cold, calculated sacrifices of his own men to achieve vital strategic objectives, earning a reputation for being ruthless. However, he is secretly tortured by guilt over the lives lost under his command. Behind his noble exterior lies a personal obsession to prove his late father's theories about the outer world.

Abilities

Erwin possesses outstanding tactical intellect and command capability. He developed the Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation, which significantly reduced casualties during expeditions outside the walls. He is highly proficient with Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, demonstrating enough combat prowess to sever restraints and fight even after losing his right arm. Furthermore, he exhibits exceptional political acumen and persuasive skill, successfully orchestrating a bloodless coup by maneuvering rival military leaders and officials.

Background

As a child, Erwin questioned his father, a history teacher, who privately theorized that the royal government erased humanity's memories. After young Erwin shared this theory with others, the Military Police executed his father under the guise of an accident. Driven by remorse to verify his father's hypothesis, Erwin joined the Survey Corps. He eventually succeeded Keith Shadis as the 13th Commander. Erwin secured Eren Jaeger's integration into the Corps, orchestrated operations against the Female Titan, and led a bloodless government coup. During the mission to retake Wall Maria, he led a suicidal distraction charge against the Beast Titan's bombardment, sustaining fatal wounds.

Relationships

Erwin shares a deep bond of mutual trust with Levi Ackerman, whom he originally recruited from the underground city and who ultimately bears the weight of Erwin's final fate. He relies heavily on Hange Zoe, whom he designates as his successor as Commander. Nile Dok, commander of the Military Police, is his former classmate from their training days; despite past romantic rivalry over the same woman, Erwin uses their shared history to sway Nile during the coup. Former commander Keith Shadis recognized Erwin's exceptional talent and handed the leadership of the Survey Corps over to him.

Trivia

Erwin's character design and personality were inspired by Ozymandias from Watchmen as well as Superman. During his childhood, his distinct physical appearance earned him the nickname "eyebrows." He chose never to marry due to the constant risk of death associated with serving in the Survey Corps. Erwin consistently ranked near the top of official character popularity polls, securing first place in the third official vote.
