Overview
Levi Ackerman is a central character in Hajime Isayama's manga Attack on Titan and the protagonist of its spin-off Attack on Titan: No Regrets. Serving as a Squad Leader in the Survey Corps, he commands the Special Operations Squad. Renowned throughout the walls as "Humanity's Strongest Soldier," he possesses combat prowess equivalent to an entire military brigade and plays a pivotal role in humanity's fight for survival.
Appearance
Levi is a man of short stature standing at 160 cm, characterized by short black hair styled in an undercut and sharp sanpaku eyes. He wears the standard Survey Corps military uniform paired with a green cloak and a white cravat around his neck. He carries Vertical Maneuvering Equipment and dual ultra-hard steel blades. In later battles, he sustains severe injuries including facial scars, the loss of his right eye, and missing fingers on his right hand, ultimately requiring the use of a wheelchair.
Personality
Levi maintains a cold, blunt, and aloof exterior, often using coarse language. Beneath his harsh demeanor lies a deeply compassionate nature; he does not hesitate to hold the blood-soaked hands of dying comrades while promising to eradicate all Titans. He is also an extreme clean freak, enforcing rigorous cleaning routines at military bases and wiping Titan blood from his equipment even during battle. He stresses the importance of making choices without regret.
Abilities
Levi's combat power is famously equated to that of an entire brigade. He demonstrates unrivaled mastery over Vertical Maneuvering Equipment, utilizing a signature fighting style where he holds ultra-hard blades in a reverse grip to perform blindingly fast spinning slashes. His strike speed can surpass a Titan's ability to harden, allowing him to overpower Intelligent Titans in close combat. When facing hardened targets, he incorporates Thunder Spears into his strategy.
Background
Born in the Underground city to a prostitute named Kuchel Ackerman, Levi was left near starvation following his mother's death. He was taken in by his maternal uncle, Kenny Ackerman, who taught him physical combat and survival tactics before leaving him. Levi later became a notorious bandit alongside his close friends Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia until he was captured and recruited into the Survey Corps by Erwin Smith. After losing his companions on a mission, he dedicated his life to the Survey Corps.
Relationships
Levi harbors absolute trust and devotion toward Commander Erwin Smith. Kenny Ackerman, who raised him during his youth, is his maternal uncle. He acts as a stern guardian and leader to Eren Yeager, while sharing blood ties with Mikasa Ackerman through the Ackerman lineage. His key personal bonds also include his early underground companions, Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia, as well as fellow Survey Corps officer Hange Zoë.
Trivia
Levi is an avid tea drinker who holds his teacups by the upper rim rather than the handle, a habit developed after a cup handle once snapped in his grip. He dislikes coffee. His first name was inspired by a boy featured in the documentary Jesus Camp, while his visual and character concept drew inspiration from the character Rorschach in the graphic novel Watchmen.
