Overview
Yelena is a character introduced in the Marley arc of Attack on Titan. She serves as the commander of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers and acts as the chief lieutenant to Zeke Yeager. Presenting herself as a supportive ally providing technological advancements and military intelligence to Paradis Island, she secretly works to bring about a monumental global objective. She is defined by her remarkable height and striking androgynous presence.
Appearance
Yelena is a tall woman standing 190 centimeters tall and weighing 63 kilograms, featuring an androgynous appearance. She has short, light-blonde hair styled in a bowl cut, paired with dark black eyes and a wide brow and eye structure. During a covert operation, she disguises herself in a male Marleyan military uniform, complete with a helmet and a fake mustache.
Personality
Polite and calm on the surface, Yelena conceals intense fanaticism and ruthless pragmatism. She views Zeke Yeager with absolute reverence, firmly believing his Euthanasia Plan is a sacred mission to save the world. She hesitates to execute insubordinate allies or opponents who disrespect her cause. Behind her quiet demeanor lies a self-centered obsession with leaving her mark on history as a legendary savior.
Abilities
As the leader of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, Yelena exhibits strong leadership and covert operational skills. She facilitated the delivery of advanced Marleyan weaponry, technical expertise, and strategic data to Paradis Island to accelerate its industrialization. She demonstrated strategic ingenuity by baiting enemy Warriors into a pitfall trap to neutralize them before combat. She is proficient with firearms for rapid executions and oversaw the clandestine distribution of wine laced with Zeke's spinal fluid.
Background
Although she initially claimed to be a soldier from a nation conquered by Marley, Yelena was actually an ordinary Marleyan citizen who became disillusioned with her homeland and sought a grand destiny. Captivated by Zeke Yeager's Titan form on the battlefield, she formed the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers to serve his vision. She arrived on Paradis Island in 851, offering modern technology to the Survey Corps while secretly preparing Zeke's Euthanasia Plan. After the Rumbling destroyed her homeland and shattered her ambitions, she was left to face an uncertain fate.
Relationships
Yelena maintains a fanatical devotion to Zeke Yeager, functioning as his right-hand operative dedicated to fulfilling his vision. She worked closely with Onyankopon as a fellow volunteer, though she concealed her true background from him. She maintained a cooperative facade with Paradis leaders like Hange Zoë and Dot Pyxis while secretly manipulating them. Her role as Zeke's lieutenant serves as a direct mirror and contrast to Floch Forster, who operated as Eren Yeager's key supporter.
Trivia
The intense glare she directs at Armin Arlert became famously known among fans as the 'Yelena face.' Her role and disposition are frequently contrasted with Floch Forster, as both served as key lieutenants to the Yeager brothers. In the final episode of the anime adaptation, an extra scene was added showing her helping carry supplies alongside Levi Ackerman and Onyankopon at a post-war refugee site.
