Overview

Frieda Reiss is a supporting character in Attack on Titan. As the eldest daughter of the noble Reiss family—the true royal dynasty ruling from behind the scenes within the Walls—she succeeded her uncle Uri Reiss to become the covert ruler of the inside realm and the bearer of the Founding Titan. Although she is deceased prior to the main narrative, her memories and inherited powers play a critical role in shaping the events of the series.

Appearance

Frieda is a young woman with long, straight black hair and striking eyes depicted as green or blue depending on the media source. She is commonly depicted wearing a plain light-colored dress during her private visits. In her Titan form, she transforms into a 13-to-14-meter-class Titan possessing distinct female physical characteristics and long black hair.

Personality

Frieda possessed a warm, humble demeanor that endeared her to the common folk residing in her family's territory. She demonstrated great compassion toward her illegitimate half-sister, Historia Reiss, secretly visiting her to teach her how to read and write. However, after acquiring the Founding Titan, she became afflicted by the First King's Vow Renouncing War. This induced severe emotional turmoil and uncontrollable outbursts of despair, during which she would agonizingly proclaim her people to be sinners.

Abilities

Frieda held the Founding Titan, the supreme entity among the Nine Titans. Her power allowed her to manipulate other Titans through the Coordinate and alter or erase the memories of Eldians, which she frequently utilized by touching foreheads with Historia to erase her sister's memories of their meetings. By biting her hand, she could transform into a 13-to-14-meter female Titan, though her lack of combat practice prevented her from utilizing her full combat potential.

Background

Frieda was born as the eldest child of Rod Reiss and his wife. In the year 842, around the age of 15, she inherited the Founding Titan from her uncle Uri Reiss. Though she originally sought to oppose the wall's status quo, inheriting the Titan bound her will to the First King's ideology. Shortly after Wall Maria fell in 845, Grisha Yeager infiltrated the subterranean chapel beneath her family estate to beg for assistance. Bound by the vow, Frieda refused, leading to a duel between their Titan forms. Lacking battle experience, Frieda was defeated and consumed by Grisha, passing her power and memories downward.

Relationships

Frieda was the daughter of Rod Reiss, the niece of Uri Reiss, and had four full siblings along with her half-sister, Historia Reiss. She harbored immense affection for Historia, frequently spending time reading and teaching her. Her life ended when she was defeated in combat by Grisha Yeager. Through Grisha, her memories and powers were passed on to Eren Yeager, in whose subconscious memory images of Frieda—such as her brushing her hair in a mirror—frequently surfaced.

Trivia

Frieda made her initial animated appearance in the spin-off series Attack on Titan: Junior High prior to making her formal debut in Season 3 of the main anime adaptation. The storybook about a kind girl named Christa that she read to Historia served as the inspiration for the false name Historia later adopted.
