Overview
Ymir Fritz is a central ancestral character from Attack on Titan. Living two thousand years in the past, she is the original ancestor of all Eldians and the very first person in history to obtain the Power of the Titans. Originally an enslaved girl under the first King Fritz, her consciousness remained trapped after death within a realm known as the Paths. There, she served as the origin of all Titan flesh and the Coordinate, making her a foundational entity behind the entire Titan phenomenon.
Appearance
She appears as a young girl with straight-cut blunt bangs, long blonde hair, and long sideburns. She has blue eyes that often bear a vacant look. Her attire features visible collarbones, along with accessories such as a hairband and an armlet, as well as white thigh-high socks.
Personality
Deeply conditioned by her history as a slave, Ymir possessed an extreme sense of servitude, remaining completely obedient to the commands of King Fritz and his royal descendants. Though reduced to a tool of war and labor, she secretly harbored an unspoken desire for love and genuine connection. Her centuries of silent submission eventually broke when her heart was touched, allowing her to express true emotion and exercise her own free will.
Abilities
Upon merging with a strange organism resembling a spine inside a hollow tree, Ymir became the first entity to acquire the Power of the Titans. She possessed immense physical capabilities that allowed her to crush armies and alter landscapes. After her physical death, her spirit sustained the realm of the Paths, where she physically sculpted every Titan body out of sand. Her power was the source from which the Nine Titans later originated.
Background
Originally a modest slave in Eldia, Ymir was hunted after being blamed for freeing swine, leading her to fall into a hollow tree cavity where she acquired the Power of the Titans. Despite gaining godlike power, she returned to King Fritz, serving as his soldier and the mother of his children. She eventually died intercepting a spear meant for the King. Her corpse was eaten by her daughters—Maria, Rose, and Sheena—to pass down her power, establishing the 13-year lifespan limit known as Ymir's Curse. Her spirit remained in the Paths for two millennia until interactions with Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman helped resolve her internal conflict, freeing her at last.
Relationships
The first King Fritz was her master and husband, who exploited her loyalty and treated her as a slave and tool. She bore him three daughters—Maria, Rose, and Sheena—who consumed her remains upon her death to inherit her power. In the modern era, Eren Yeager reached her in the Paths and urged her to act on her own desires. Ultimately, it was Mikasa Ackerman whose actions helped Ymir break free from her centuries-long emotional bonds.
Trivia
Her name and concept are derived from Ymir, the primeval giant in Norse mythology. Fans often refer to her by titles such as the Founder Ymir or the Paths Administrator due to her role in managing the Titan realm.
