Overview

Nanaba is a key supporting character from Isayama Hajime's manga series Attack on Titan and its anime and game adaptations. Operating as an elite veteran soldier within the Survey Corps, she managed to survive the high-mortality wall-clearing expeditions for years prior to the breach of Wall Maria. Serving primarily in the squad led by Section Commander Mike Zacharias, she plays a vital tactical role during combat operations while providing steadfast leadership to younger squad members.

Appearance

Nanaba features an elegant, androgynous appearance marked by short pale blonde hair and clear blue eyes. She is outfitted in the standard Survey Corps military attire, consisting of a brown jacket, thigh straps, boots, and Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. Although her gender is kept intentionally unstated in the original manga, anime adaptations and video games portray her with a decidedly female design.

Personality

Nanaba is defined by her remarkable level-headedness, allowing her to stay calm and assess critical threats even during severe emergencies. She possesses a firm sense of pride and duty, believing senior soldiers must never show weakness in front of recruits. Warm, approachable, and protective toward newcomers, she earns widespread respect among her peers. When her comrades are endangered, she demonstrates selflessness and deep devotion, placing their safety above her own.

Abilities

With years of experience surviving in the Survey Corps, Nanaba possesses top-tier combat skills utilizing Vertical Maneuvering Equipment and dual blades. She demonstrates lethal efficiency in titan combat, expertly using high structures like castle ruins to eliminate swarms of enemies. Beyond her personal fighting ability, she exhibits exceptional field command capabilities, successfully directing regional evacuations, scouting wall breaches, and leading squad formations under high pressure.

Background

Having joined the Survey Corps well before the fall of Wall Maria, Nanaba is one of the few long-term survivors of the corps' dangerous operations. During the 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, she managed defense lines at the Forest of Giant Trees. When Titans appeared inside Wall Rose, she led the Western Squad to evacuate local villagers and search for wall breaches. After taking shelter at Utgard Castle, her unit was ambushed at night by Titans controlled by the Beast Titan. She fought valiantly to defend the unarmed recruits, but exhausted all her gas and blades to rescue Gelgar. Trapped without equipment, she was tragically devoured. Her agonizing final moments in the anime adaptation feature distressed cries begging her father for mercy, implying a traumatic childhood.

Relationships

Nanaba shares deep mutual trust with her commander, Section Commander Mike Zacharias, frequently executing high-risk missions at his side. She maintains a close combat partnership with fellow veteran Gelgar, risking everything to protect him during their last stand. To junior soldiers like Krista Lenz and Ymir, she serves as a compassionate and dependable senior officer who offers clear guidance and protection during perilous assignments.

Trivia

Although her gender is unspecified in the manga source, dialogue in the game Attack on Titan 2 shows Nanaba brushing off comments about her ambiguous looks, noting that gender holds no relevance for soldiers fighting Titans. Additionally, according to squad leader Mike Zacharias's keen sense of smell, Nanaba possesses a notably pleasant, fruity scent. Her name Nanaba corresponds to an existing feminine given name in Western countries.
