Background
Years prior to the main story, Keith discovered Grisha Yeager outside the walls and eventually rose to become the 12th Commander of the Survey Corps. After disastrous expeditions resulted in heavy casualties without progress, he resigned and yielded command to Erwin Smith, becoming an instructor. Out of concern for Carla Yeager's son, Eren, he covertly damaged Eren's training device to discourage him, though Eren's determination overrode his plan. In the final conflict, after escaping imprisonment by the Jaegerists and saving young recruits, Keith joined Marleyan commander Theo Magath in detonating a warship's ammunition depot to block pursuers, dying in the explosion.
Relationships
Keith formed an acquaintance with Grisha Yeager after bringing him into the walls and held unrequited romantic feelings for Carla Yeager. He attempted to protect their son, Eren Yeager, from military life, though he came to respect Eren's resolve. He recognized Erwin Smith's superior capabilities and willingly yielded leadership of the Survey Corps to him.
