Overview
Ymir is a character in Hajime Isayama's manga series Attack on Titan and its derived works. A tall female soldier who graduated from the 104th Trainees Squad and joined the Survey Corps, she presents an icy, sharp-tongued demeanor while secretly harboring deep affection and concern for her fellow trainee, Krista Lenz.
Appearance
Ymir is a tall young woman with sharp black eyes and freckles across her face. She has short to medium black hair parted in the middle and tied back in a low ponytail. While serving as a soldier, she wears the standard military uniform featuring a jacket and boots. In other depictions, she is seen wearing a strapless blue dress along with a tiara or crown.
Personality
Cynical, sarcastic, and outwardly sharp-tongued, Ymir maintains a poker-faced and self-serving front. Beneath her abrasive shell, she possesses keen insight into human nature. She despises dishonesty, particularly encouraging Krista Lenz to abandon her facade and live proudly under her real identity, demonstrating a deeply protective and devoted devotion to her.
Abilities
Ymir exhibits high combat aptitude within the 104th Trainees Squad, though she intentionally intentionally threw her ranking to allow Krista to graduate in the top ten. She can decipher ancient, non-wall scripts. Furthermore, she possesses the power of the Jaw Titan, allowing her to transform via self-injury into an agile Titan utilizing razor-sharp teeth and claws in combat.
Background
Originally a homeless orphan in Marley, she was taken by a cult and given the revered name Ymir. When discovered by Marleyan authorities, she was turned into a Pure Titan and wandered Paradis Island for roughly 60 years. Upon consuming Marcel, one of Marley's Titan warriors, she regained human form and inherited the Jaw Titan. Vowing to live truthfully, she joined the military and met Krista. After revealing her Titan form during the battle at Utgard Castle, she ultimately chose to depart with Reiner and Bertholdt, voluntarily returning to Marley where her Titan power was passed on.
Relationships
She shares a profound bond with Krista Lenz (Historia Reiss), urging her to live under her true name and showing unmatched devotion to her. Her relationship with Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover transitions from wary suspicion to a complicated mutual understanding born of shared Marleyan origins. She also holds a pivotal connection to Marcel Galliard, whose Jaw Titan power she unwittingly acquired.
Trivia
Her name originates from Ymir, the primeval giant in Norse mythology, and reflects the historical cult worship of the original Ymir Fritz in the series. She ranked 12th in the third official popularity poll and 13th in the final chapter commemoration poll.
