Hagiwara Chihaya

Overview

Hagiwara Chihaya is a recurring character in the manga and anime series Detective Conan. She is a 31-year-old Assistant Inspector who serves as a platoon leader in the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Traffic Department's Third Mobile Unit. As the elder sister of the deceased police officer Kenji Hagiwara, she is a remarkably skilled traffic officer known for her peerless motorcycle driving techniques and keen observational skills. She also plays a central role in the feature film Detective Conan: Angel of the Highway.

Appearance

Hagiwara Chihaya is a striking woman characterized by her long blonde hair, blue eyes, and slightly downturned eyes resembling her younger brother's. She wears lipstick on her lips. While on duty, she rides a white police motorcycle, dressed in a blue traffic police uniform with a turtleneck underneath, white gloves, and a white helmet featuring a police badge emblem. Upon seeing her, Ran Mouri remarked that she resembled a wind goddess.

Personality

Chihaya maintains a calm composure during crises, yet reveals a fierce and reckless temperament when behind the handlebars or pushed to anger. She possesses a firm sense of resolve, undeterred by potential disciplinary action for her unorthodox conduct. Although she refers to herself in a refined manner, her speaking tone is decidedly masculine and direct, affectionately addressing Conan as "boy." She tends to prioritize food over romance, casually teasing and dismissing romantic overtures. Furthermore, she respects individuals who selflessly risk themselves to protect others.

Abilities

Chihaya possesses outstanding motorcycle driving skills, capable of executing complex maneuvers such as wheelies, stoppies, and using her motorcycle's front wheel to strike suspects. Her sharp observational skills allow her to identify suspects by examining subtle details, such as footwear stains indicating recent motorcycle riding. According to her brother, her hand-to-hand combat skills are average, her running speed is ordinary, and her marksmanship is remarkably poor. Domestically, while her cleaning habits are adequate, her cooking skills are notably clumsy.

Background

During her elementary school years, Chihaya became acquainted with Jinpei Matsuda, who was her younger brother's close friend and came to hold romantic feelings for her. Her past was marked by tragedy when her brother, Kenji Hagiwara, was killed in the line of duty seven years prior, followed three years later by Matsuda's death at the hands of the same serial bomber. After seeing news coverage of how Conan Edogawa successfully brought the bomber to justice, she developed a deep sense of gratitude toward the boy. She eventually crossed paths with him during a kidnapping case in Kanagawa Prefecture, rescuing him during a critical moment and assisting in apprehending the culprits.

Relationships

Chihaya held deep affection for her younger brother, Kenji Hagiwara, whose tragic death in a bombing left a lasting impact on her. She was also close to his best friend, Jinpei Matsuda, who harbored a long-standing crush on her since childhood. In her workplace, Inspector Jugo Yokomizo displays romantic interest toward her, and despite his senior age and rank, she speaks to him casually while respecting his courage. She holds profound gratitude and trust toward Conan Edogawa for bringing down the bomber who took her loved ones, pledging to assist him whenever needed. She also maintains a long-time friendship with Shinobu Oe.

Trivia

The name Chihaya Hagiwara, along with her friend Shinobu Oe, is widely believed to be inspired by characters from the manga Chihayafuru, specifically Chihaya Ayase, Kanade Oe, and Shinobu Wakomiya. Additionally, the concept of Kenji Hagiwara having an older sister had already been established during the initial planning of the Police Academy Arc, though her formal appearance in the main storyline occurred later.
