Overview

Sumiko Kobayashi is a character in Detective Conan. She is a 26-year-old homeroom teacher of Class 1-B at Teitan Elementary School, overseeing Conan Edogawa and his classmates. Serving as the self-appointed advisor to the Detective Boys, she warmly supports their activities while carrying out her teaching duties. She is also in a romantic relationship with Inspector Ninzaburo Shiratori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Appearance

Sumiko Kobayashi has short black hair, gentle eyes, and straight sideburns, normally wearing eyeglasses. Inside the school, she primarily wears a tracksuit, though she has also appeared in a suit and casual attire. When she takes off her glasses and applies makeup, her facial appearance becomes nearly identical to Detective Miwako Sato.

Personality

Deeply fond of children, Sumiko is naturally gentle and kind-hearted. Although she initially put on a stern exterior due to a past teaching setback, she returned to her naturally warm persona and became beloved by her students. Influenced by Edogawa Ranpo's mystery novels, she possesses a fierce sense of justice and previously aspired to join the police force. She also suffers from a severe fear of birds.

Abilities

As an elementary school educator, she utilizes puppets to conduct engaging classroom lessons. Although her deductive reasoning skills are mediocre and she lacks field investigative experience, she possesses remarkable physical strength and endurance, capable of moving multiple heavy plaster statues and anatomical models across the school overnight. She does not hold a driver's license and cannot drive motor vehicles or motorcycles.

Background

An alumna of Teitan Elementary School, Sumiko returned there as a teacher. During her childhood, she bravely confronted shoplifters at a bookstore and was rescued by a young Ninzaburo Shiratori, to whom she gave a handmade paper sakura ring. This encounter inspired Shiratori to pursue a career in law enforcement. Years later, after resolving a case of mistaken identity involving Detective Sato, the two reconnected and officially became a couple.

Relationships

She is romantically involved with Inspector Ninzaburo Shiratori, her childhood encounter who became her lover. She serves as the homeroom teacher and self-proclaimed advisor to Conan Edogawa, Ai Haibara, Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima of the Detective Boys. Due to her striking facial resemblance to Detective Miwako Sato when unglassed, officers like Yumi Miyamoto have confused the two. Rumi Wakasa is her teaching colleague.

Trivia

Contrary to common belief, her surname was derived from a real-life acquaintance of series creator Gosho Aoyama rather than Yoshio Kobayashi from the Kaijin Nijumenso stories. Her intense ornithophobia stems from a childhood memory of watching condors feed on animal carcasses on television. Additionally, her last name Kobayashi is occasionally used as a lighthearted joke within the story.
