Overview

Haibara Ai is a main character in Detective Conan and a member of the Junior Detective League. Her true identity is Miyano Shiho, codenamed Sherry, a former scientist for the Black Organization. After ingesting her own experimental drug, APTX4869, her body shrank, allowing her to escape the organization. She currently resides with Professor Agasa and attends Teitan Elementary School while secretly researching an antidote to restore her original form. As one of the few who know Conan Edogawa's true identity, she serves as a vital partner and key ally in his investigations.

Appearance

She is characterized by her wavy, reddish-brown hair and blue eyes, featuring refined, distinct facial features. Following her physical regression, her height is similar to that of her elementary school classmates. In her original eighteen-year-old body, she has a fully developed figure. Her wardrobe includes long-sleeved tops, dresses, and frilled shirts, and she often wears a white lab coat during scientific research.

Personality

Haibara is exceptionally calm, rational, and mature, maintaining a composed and somewhat detached demeanor. Though initially highly cautious and guarded, her interactions with her peers have rendered her more expressive and approachable. She possesses a sharp wit, frequently offering blunt commentary, yet displays a gentler side around animals. While she once harbored a self-sacrificing mindset, describing herself as a shark dwelling in dark waters, she gradually adopts a more positive outlook. Additionally, she has a keen interest in fashion brands and follows soccer, exhibiting intense enthusiasm for specific players.

Abilities

She possesses advanced expertise in pharmacology and chemistry, enabling her to formulate complex drugs and their countermeasures. Her technical skills include computer programming and rapid physics calculations. Fluent in multiple languages such as English and Russian, she is also knowledgeable in medicine and anatomy. In addition, she demonstrates proficiency in handling firearms, driving vehicles, and operating heavy motorcycles. She also exhibits a unique sensory ability that alerts her to the presence of Black Organization members.

Background

Born to a Japanese father, Miyano Atsushi, and a British-Japanese mother, Miyano Irene, she studied abroad before joining the Black Organization to continue her parents' research. When her elder sister, Miyano Akemi, was killed by the organization, she halted her research in protest, resulting in her confinement. Expecting execution, she took a hidden capsule of APTX4869 to end her life, but the drug unexpectedly shrank her body, allowing her to escape through a waste chute. She collapsed outside Shinichi Kudou's home, where she was rescued by Professor Agasa and given her new identity.

Relationships

She shares a deep bond of mutual trust with Conan Edogawa (Shinichi Kudou), working alongside him as a dependable partner. She lives with Professor Agasa, who took her in, and manages his diet and daily routine like family. Although initially distant toward Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima of the Junior Detective League, she grows to cherish and protect them. Her relationship with Ran Mouri evolves from cautious detachment to profound affection, as she comes to see reflections of her late sister, Miyano Akemi, in Ran.

Trivia

Her alias, Haibara Ai, was created in consultation with Professor Agasa. The character for "Hai" (meaning gray) was derived from Cordelia Gray, a female detective from P.D. James's novels. The name "Ai" comes from the letter "I" in V.I. Warshawski, as well as Irene Adler from the Sherlock Holmes stories. Her real name, Miyano Shiho, was named after an acquaintance of the author, Gosho Aoyama.
