Background
Subaru originally resided in the Mokubasou apartment complex in Beika Town. After the building was destroyed in an arson fire started by another resident, Conan Edogawa invited him to live in the vacant Kudo residence on the condition that he look after the house. In truth, Subaru is a secret identity created for FBI agent Shuichi Akai following a fake death scheme orchestrated alongside Conan and CIA agent Rena Mizunashi. Assuming the persona of Subaru Okiya—a person who legally does not exist—he continues his undercover life while discreetly monitoring surrounding events.
Relationships
Subaru maintains a close tactical partnership with Conan Edogawa, who engineered his disguise. Yusaku Kudo, Yukiko Kudo, and Professor Hiroshi Agasa are key allies aware of his true identity; Yukiko instructed him in disguise and cooking, while Agasa supplied his voice-changing device. Although Ai Haibara initially distrusted him due to sensing an ominous aura, Subaru quietly serves as her protector. Trivia
Subaru Okiya's name is derived from Casval Rem Deikun, a famous character from Mobile Suit Gundam. Similarly, the name of his former residence, the Mokubasou apartment, references the Zeon moniker for the White Base in the same series. During his time at Mokubasou, the landlord's young son gave him the nickname "Red Person" due to his morning routine of watering plants and its association with fire trucks. When spoken to while brushing his teeth without his active voice changer, he responded purely through body language to prevent his real voice from being heard.
