Overview

Kazunobu Chiba is a sergeant in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division, working directly under Inspector Juzo Megure in the Detective Conan series. Originally created for the television anime adaptation, his popular character was later integrated into the original manga storyline. He is a graduate of Teitan Elementary School, making him a senior alumnus to Conan Edogawa and Ran Mouri. Working frequently alongside Wataru Takagi, he serves as a dedicated police officer while maintaining a relatable, ordinary life outside of duty.

Appearance

He features short black hair and black eyes. Initially depicted with a slim physique, he evolved over time into a noticeably plump appearance, which reflects his childhood look at Teitan Elementary School. Rather than wearing standard formal attire, he typically dresses in jackets layered over collarless shirts or sweaters. At one point, he experienced a dramatic weight loss that rendered him exceptionally slim, though he quickly reverted to his rotund build after consuming large amounts of chocolate.

Personality

He is a gentle, soft-spoken officer who maintains a friendly rapport with the Junior Detective League and supportive attitudes toward his fellow officers' romances. A passionate otaku, he deeply admires tokusatsu franchises like Kamen Yaiba and Gomera, and prefers cats over dogs. His personal life is somewhat messy, marked by a cluttered apartment and a tendency to oversleep, which he actively tries to remedy with alarm clocks. Despite his relaxed demeanor, he holds an unyielding sense of justice when confronting criminals.

Abilities

As an investigation division officer, he effectively carries out standard police duties, crime scene reconstructions, and criminal investigations. He frequently assists with validating complex locked-room gimmicks alongside Wataru Takagi. He possesses a strong physical resolution in high-stakes situations, frequently encountering unexpected criminal cases even while off duty and aiding in their resolution.

Background

During his years at Teitan Elementary School, he developed feelings for his classmate Naeko Miike, though she moved away before anything developed. Years later, as a police detective, a misunderstanding at a school reunion led him to believe she had married someone else. Even after Naeko transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's traffic division and worked near him, he remained oblivious to her identity for a long time. Upon rescuing her from a kidnapping with Conan Edogawa, she recited the exact traffic safety rule he had taught her as a child, leading him to realize who she was and officially begin dating her.

Relationships

He is in a romantic relationship with Naeko Miike, his childhood classmate from Teitan Elementary School. Within the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, he works under Inspector Juzo Megure and Kiyonaga Matsumoto, maintaining a close professional friendship with Wataru Takagi. He maintains active working relationships with fellow officers Miwako Sato, Ninzaburo Shiratori, and Yumi Miyamoto, as well as acquaintances like Sakurako Yonehara. He is also well-acquainted with Conan Edogawa, Ran Mouri, and Kogoro Mouri.

Trivia

His name and physical design were directly inspired by his Japanese voice actor, Kazunobu Chiba, sharing the same kanji representation as the voice actor's birth name. Among the officers in the series, he is particularly notable for his unusually high rate of encountering personal misfortunes and criminal incidents, such as vehicle break-ins, while off duty.
