Appearance
He is a dark-skinned man with stubble and hair tied back in a short ponytail or bun. He has a cross-shaped scar over his blind left eye and walks using a cane due to a leg injury. He is most commonly seen wearing a blue suit with a white shirt and blue tie, though he has also worn a black suit with a gray shirt and reddish-brown tie, as well as various winter coats in green or pink.
Personality
Impatience and a quick temper define his hard-boiled exterior, and he frequently employs coarse language and aggressive phrasing. Beneath his harsh front lies a considerate officer with a robust sense of justice. When interacting with his rival Morofushi Taka'aki, his competitive drive often leads him to lose his composure. He takes his food preferences seriously, particularly regarding soba and coffee. When sleeping, he is noted for producing extraordinarily loud, roar-like snores.
Abilities
Possessing sharp intuition and deductive skills comparable to top detectives, he excels at identifying minor discrepancies in case reports and physical evidence. He is knowledgeable in ancient Chinese military tactics, applying strategic principles to complex operations. Despite his walking impairment, he remains highly capable in physical confrontations, using his cane effectively to subdue criminal suspects.
Background
Inspired in his youth by an officer named Kai Kuroto, Yamato joined the police force to uncover the truth behind his mentor's suspicious death. While pursuing a lead, he was hit by a rifle bullet that caused an avalanche, leaving him severely injured and missing for six months. After being located in a hospital, he recovered and returned to active duty in Nagano. He later helped persuade his childhood friend Uehara Yui to rejoin the department.
Relationships
He shares a profound bond of mutual affection and trust with his subordinate and childhood friend, Uehara Yui. Inspector Morofushi Taka'aki has been his classmate and primary rival since elementary school, maintaining a relationship built on fierce competition and unshakeable trust. He treats Conan Edogawa with high regard, realizing the boy handles the deductions attributed to Kogoro Mouri. Kuroda Hyoue serves as his superior officer in the police hierarchy.
Trivia
His name and physical design are modeled after Yamamoto Kansuke, the famous military strategist who served Takeda Shingen. His habit of using regional Nagano vocabulary led to a misunderstanding when he used 'han-goroshi'—a local term for coarsely crushed rice cakes—which listeners misinterpreted as a violent threat. He is adept at making these traditional sweet rice cakes using a family recipe passed down from his grandmother.
