Overview

Hyoue Kuroda is a prominent police official in Detective Conan. Holding the rank of Superintendent, he previously served as the Chief of the First Investigative Division of the Nagano Prefectural Police before being transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department as a Management Officer. Due to his imposing physique and artificial eye, he was initially suspected of being Rum, the second-in-command of the Black Organization. Appearance

Hyoue Kuroda is a 50-year-old man with a tall, muscular frame and dark skin. His hair, originally black, turned entirely white from the severe stress of a past traumatic incident. Severe burn scars cover the right side of his face, and his missing right eye has been replaced with a prosthetic. He wears specialized eyeglasses featuring a standard clear lens over his functional left eye and a dark, tinted lens over his right side to obscure the glass eye. He is further distinguished by his thick eyebrows and facial hair.

Personality

Despite his menacing and intimidating exterior, Hyoue Kuroda is a highly rational, composed, and honorable law enforcement leader. He possesses exceptional intuition, recognizing Edogawa Conan's intelligence without prejudice and readily delegating field operations based on the young boy's insights. Kuroda maintains a calm demeanor under pressure and holds a personal fondness for black tea. Before suffering a life-altering accident seventeen years prior, he was known to possess a significantly more cheerful and personable disposition.

Abilities

Hyoue Kuroda possesses top-tier physical combat capabilities and refined reflexes. He is skilled enough to effortlessly evade and counter unexpected attacks from behind using minimal movement without even turning around. His observation power is remarkably acute, allowing him to perceive minor physical habits and body movements during physical combat. Furthermore, as a high-ranking official, he demonstrates outstanding tactical command, organizational leadership, and analytical oversight over complex law enforcement operations.

Background

Seventeen years ago, while serving in the secret agency Zero at age thirty-three, Hyoue Kuroda traveled to the United States and became embroiled in the mysterious murders of Amanda Hughes and Haneda Koji. In an effort to protect Rachel Asaka from danger, he knocked her unconscious and attempted to escape with her in a vehicle. However, his car was violently struck by a heavy truck, causing him severe burn injuries, the loss of his right eye, and a coma that lasted nearly ten years. Upon awakening in a police hospital with altered features and memory gaps, he resumed duty by taking a posting at the Nagano Prefectural Police before eventually assuming the position of Management Officer at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Relationships

Hyoue Kuroda places deep trust in Edogawa Conan, acknowledging the boy's central role behind Sleeping Kogoro and seeking his insights during complex investigations. He acts as the direct superior to undercover public security officers Rei Furuya and Muga Iori, maintaining confidential communications using their secret operational aliases. He keeps a close watch on Rumi Wakasa, knowing her connection to the tragic incident seventeen years ago as Rachel Asaka. Within the police force, he previously oversaw Yamato Kansuke, Morofushi Takaaki, and Yui Uehara in Nagano, and succeeded Kiyonaga Matsumoto as Management Officer in Tokyo.

Trivia

The character's name and concept are derived from Kuroda Kanbei (Kuroda Joshui), the renowned Sengoku-period military strategist who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi. His initial animated debut coincided with the broadcast of the historical Taiga drama Gunshi Kanbei, which focused on the same historical figure. Additionally, despite his stern appearance and high-ranking police authority, he is consistently depicted as an avid enthusiast of black tea.
