Crusch Karsten

Overview

A character from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. Crusch Karsten is the young head of the prestigious House Karsten and a leading candidate in the Royal Selection to choose the next monarch of the Kingdom of Lugnica. Recognized for her cross-dressing attire and commanding presence, she possesses exceptional leadership traits. Rejecting the kingdom's reliance on the Dragon's covenant, she campaigns on a platform of human independence and self-governance.

Appearance

Crusch has long green hair with sidelocks and hair falling between her sharp, amber-colored eyes. She typically wears masculine military attire featuring a blue jacket with epaulettes, a white ascot, white gloves, blue trousers, black boots, and a matching blue hat. Although she routinely dresses in male clothing, she occasionally puts on feminine garments during relaxed private moments.

Personality

Crusch is highly principled, disciplined, and resolute, expecting the same standard of integrity from others as she does from herself. Beneath her stern and dignified exterior as a noble ruler, she is deeply sincere and shows a surprisingly naive side around trusted allies, often taking Felix Argyle's playful deception at face value. She is notably dense regarding romantic feelings.

Abilities

She possesses the Divine Protection of Wind Evasion, allowing her to see subtle shifts in the wind and discern lies by reading the emotional atmosphere surrounding an individual. A skilled swordsman and user of wind magic, she can channel her blade's edge through wind mana to launch distant area-of-effect slashes, a signature technique known as the Hundred-Man Strike. She is also proficient in dragon riding, negotiation, and cooking.

Background

Having assumed leadership of House Karsten at a young age, Crusch spent her youth bonding with Prince Fourier Lugnica and Felix Argyle. During an attack on her territory by the Great Rabbit, she led the defense herself and repelled the threat, earning the title of Valkyrie. Following the extinction of the royal line, she entered the Royal Selection to break Lugnica's reliance on the Dragon. She later forged an alliance with Natsuki Subaru to slay the White Whale, though she subsequently lost her memories in an ambush by the Sin Archbishops.

Relationships

She shares a bond of unwavering trust with her knight, Felix Argyle, whom she has known since childhood. Her determination to seek the throne was profoundly influenced by the late Prince Fourier Lugnica. Through negotiations over the White Whale hunt, she recognized Natsuki Subaru's resolve and insight, establishing a strong alliance built on mutual respect.

Trivia

Her birthday on April 4 corresponds to a Japanese wordplay pun on shishi, meaning lion. Following the loss of her memories to the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony after the White Whale battle, her speech mannerisms and wardrobe temporarily shifted to become distinctly softer and more feminine.
