Shaula

Overview

Shaula is a character from Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-. She acts as the star watcher of the Pleiades Watchtower, situated in the depths of the Augria Sand Dunes. Although historical accounts describe the legendary Sage—one of the Three Heroes who sealed the Witch of Envy—as a young man, Shaula appears as a strikingly dressed woman.

Appearance

Shaula is a glamorous woman with long brown hair styled into a scorpion-tail high ponytail featuring a single braid and a star ornament. She has green eyes with extra pupils. Her revealing attire consists of a two-sided fabric cape, a black front-tie bikini top, black short shorts with an orange belt, and high-cut footwear.

Personality

Shaula has a lighthearted, highly casual temperament. She speaks using informal slang, addressing herself as 'a-shi' and ending sentences with '-ssu', completely lacking the gravity expected of an ancient entity. She is intensely affectionate and devoted toward the person she regards as her master, yet remains strictly bound to her duties, turning into an unfeeling executioner if the watchtower's rules are violated.

Abilities

Shaula excels at using the magic spell Hell's Snipe, which connects her needles to targets via mana. This ability enables hyper-precise, rapid-fire, and high-power long-range attacks to repel intruders. Her true nature is that of the Crimson Scorpion, a Demon Beast, allowing her to transform into a massive scorpion form with overwhelming lethal capabilities.

Background

Having contributed to sealing the Witch of Envy 400 years ago, Shaula remained at the Pleiades Watchtower to guard the sealed shrine. While history attributes the Sage's great deeds to her, she clarifies that her master, Flugel, was the actual Sage, while she was tasked with defending the tower and acting as the guardian of its trials.

Relationships

Shaula holds immense affection for Natsuki Subaru, recognizing him by his scent as her beloved master, Flugel. In contrast, she holds a grudge against Reid Astrea, calling him a terrible person due to past interactions. She also interacts with Subaru's companions, including Ram and Meili Portroute, during their arrival at the tower.

Trivia

Her name is derived from the second-magnitude star Shaula in the constellation Scorpius, which translates to 'stinger' or 'needle'. Additionally, the Pleiades Watchtower takes its name from the Pleiades star cluster, which corresponds to Subaru in Japanese and stems from the seven sisters of Greek mythology.
