Overview

Wilhelm van Astrea is a character from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. Serving as a loyal butler to the royal selection candidate Crusch Karsten, he is a legendary swordsman known throughout the kingdom by the fearsome epithet 'Sword Demon.' Although he exhibits a polite, composed, and highly refined demeanor in daily life, he reveals an intensely aggressive combatant side when stepping onto the battlefield. He is the husband of the late former Sword Saint and serves as the main protagonist in several spin-off light novel volumes covering his youth.

Appearance

Wilhelm is an elderly male with a trained physique marked by numerous scars. He features blue eyes, facial hair, and medium-length grey hair secured into a low ponytail with a dark ribbon. His standard attire consists of a formal butler outfit including a dark jacket, a frilled white shirt, a dark bowtie, dark pants, dark footwear, and white gloves. He is also noted as a carriage driver. In his youth, he had brown hair.

Personality

Generally calm, courteous, and highly refined, Wilhelm exhibits the traits of an impeccable gentleman. However, beneath his polished exterior lies a fierce, combat-crazed obsession when drawn into battle. He is profoundly devoted to his late wife, Theresia van Astrea, often praising her with complete candor to the point of overwhelming those around him. Because he prioritizes his wife above all else, he can occasionally reveal an awkward side when dealing with personal matters.

Abilities

Possessing no divine protections and no magic, Wilhelm reached the pinnacle of swordsmanship solely through half a lifetime of relentless sword practice, claiming to lack innate talent himself. Armed with an intensely trained body and a formidable aura, his raw physical specs and honed techniques rank him among the top human combatants, capable of defeating even a Sword Saint in pure combat.

Background

Originally bearing the surname Trias, he sought to free Theresia van Astrea from the burden of her sword-bearing destiny. Following two years of intense training, he defeated her in single combat, took her family name upon marriage, and joined the Astrea family. After losing his wife to the monstrous White Whale, he harbored a long-standing desire for vengeance, eventually forming a bond of deep gratitude toward Natsuki Subaru for granting him the opportunity to battle the beast.

Relationships

He serves Crusch Karsten with absolute loyalty as her butler. He holds deep, enduring affection for his late wife, Theresia van Astrea. Conversely, his familial bonds with his son, Heinkel Astrea, and his grandson, Reinhard van Astrea, are severely strained and conflicted. He maintains profound respect and gratitude toward Natsuki Subaru.

Trivia

Wilhelm serves as the central protagonist of the side-story novel volumes Sword Demon Love Song, Sword Demon Love Tale, and Sword Demon Battle Song. Within the story, he is familiarly referred to by the nickname Vil-jii.
