Overview
Old Man Rom, whose true name is Valga Cromwell, is a character from Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-. He is a Giant elder who manages a stolen goods warehouse located in the slums of the Royal Capital of Lugunica. Once a prominent military strategist for the Demi-Human Alliance during the Demi-Human War, he now lives a quieter life dealing in illicit merchandise while caring for the orphaned girl Felt like his own granddaughter.
Appearance
Rom is a massive Giant standing over two meters tall and weighing more than 160 kilograms. He is completely bald and possesses a heavily muscled build with black eyes and a fierce facial expression. His design also includes body tattoos and an earring.
Personality
Despite his intimidating appearance and rough demeanor, Rom is a kindhearted and sensible individual who frequently looks out for others. He deeply adores Felt, treating her with protective warmth. While he can sound abrasive when startled or irritated, he is fundamentally rational and practical. Historically, he harbored a deep dislike of humans and was capable of ruthless tactics during wartime, yet in daily life he proves to be an approachable and sharp-eyed appraiser.
Abilities
Rom possesses a dependable eye for appraising stolen merchandise and wields a massive club in combat. As a Giant, he holds the racial ability to expand his physical size, capable of reaching up to ten meters in height. Beyond his physical prowess, he is an exceptionally intelligent military strategist adept at commanding forces and discerning the mechanics behind complex opponent abilities.
Background
Decades prior, Rom served as a key brain and general for the Demi-Human Alliance during the Demi-Human War. Following the conflict, he withdrew to the capital slums to run his warehouse and took in the young orphan Felt. After she was selected as a royal candidate by Reinhard van Astrea, Rom attempted to rescue her, eventually stepping up to become the chief strategist supporting Felt's faction in the Royal Selection.
Relationships
Rom shares a bond akin to real family with Felt, having raised her from a young age. He meets Natsuki Subaru and Emilia through transactions at his warehouse. During the Demi-Human War, he crossed swords with figures like Wilhelm van Astrea. In later confrontations, he engages in a battle of wits against Aldebaran, using clever tactical traps to counter his enemy's time-reversal authority.
Trivia
Although his name sounds phonetically similar to Rem and Ram, he has no relation to the twin sisters. Despite his fearsome frame, he is a well-respected figure among the residents of the slums.
