Overview
Elsa Granhilte is a major antagonist in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. Infamously known by the epithet "Bowel Hunter," she operates as a lethal assassin for hire. Beneath her alluring and voluptuous presentation lies a deeply twisted individual with a violent obsession. She serves as a prominent early and recurring threat to Natsuki Subaru and his allies, driving critical conflicts throughout the story.
Appearance
Elsa is a striking woman with long black hair, purple eyes, and a mole under her eye. Her hairstyle features a braid and a flower hair ornament. She wears a strapless black dress that leaves her shoulders bare, along with pantyhose and bridal gauntlets. Over her outfit, she wears a black and purple double-sided cloak that possesses a spell capable of negating a single magical attack.
Personality
Despite her soft-spoken tone and calm facial expressions, Elsa is a sadistic and masochistic battle enthusiast. She derives intense pleasure from slicing open her victims' abdomens to observe their innards. Valuing the thrill of life-or-death combat above all else, she finds equal satisfaction whether she ends her opponent's life or meets her own demise in battle, often reacting with ecstasy during gruesome encounters.
Abilities
Elsa possesses exceptionally high physical capabilities and agility, wielding dual kukri-like blades alongside throwable concealed weapons. In combat, she disorients foes with swift movements before unleashing aggressive dual-wielding techniques. As a vampire, she possesses astounding regenerative abilities, allowing her to recover from mortal wounds and repeatedly resurrect unless decapitated, often using her self-healing to launch relentless, defense-ignoring assaults.
Background
Originating from the freezing northern realm of Gusteko, Elsa grew up as a destitute orphan. After being caught stealing, she used a glass shard to cut open her captor's stomach, discovering a profound warmth in blood and organs that provided solace from the cold. This moment catalyzed her career as a deadly assassin. She was later hired to steal Emilia's insignia and assault the Roswaal mansion alongside Meili Portroute, repeatedly bringing death to Natsuki Subaru.
Relationships
Elsa acts as a recurring nightmare for Natsuki Subaru, taking his life across multiple timeline loops. She targeted Emilia to steal her royal candidate insignia. Operating under contracts issued by Roswaal L. Mathers, she partnered with the mabeast tamer Meili Portroute during mansion raids. In combat, she has engaged in fierce, deadly clashes against Linehard van Astrea and Garfiel Tinsel.
Trivia
The original author noted that Elsa represents both the most sadistic and most masochistic character in the series. Although a terrifying antagonist in the main story, certain official alternate IF scenarios feature her and Meili Portroute as dependable allies to Natsuki Subaru, even showing her sacrificing herself to protect him.
