Overview
Satella is a major character in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. Known as the Witch of Envy among the Witches of Sin, she is a half-elf who nearly destroyed the world four hundred years ago before being sealed away in the eastern dunes of Lugnica by the Three Heroes. She is the entity who bestowed the Return by Death ability upon Natsuki Subaru, making her a central and mysterious figure in the narrative.
Appearance
Satella is a half-elf with purple eyes, pointed ears, and long silver hair featuring bangs and sidelocks. Her facial features are identical to Emilia's. She wears a purple sleeveless dress exposing her collarbone, accompanied by detached wide black sleeves, black thighhighs, and a black flower hair ornament. When her face is obscured, she is covered by shadows or a hood. In animated depictions, her outfit incorporates yellow rose decorations.
Personality
Due to absorbing a Witch Factor without compatibility, Satella possesses a split personality. The Witch of Envy side exhibits an obsessive, terrifying devotion to Natsuki Subaru, acting out of extreme jealousy whenever he interacts with others. Conversely, Satella's original personality is gentle and kindhearted, expressing genuine concern for Subaru's well-being and urging him to value his own life.
Abilities
Satella possesses dark-element magic, specializing in spatial manipulation techniques such as Al Shamak. She is also capable of stopping time. Her abilities include manifesting engulfing shadows and controlling over two thousand shadow tentacles reminiscent of unseen hands, exerting catastrophic destructive power. Additionally, she grants the Return by Death power to Subaru.
Background
Four hundred years in the past, Satella absorbed the Witch Factor despite lacking compatibility, creating a destructive alternate persona. This entity consumed six other Witches of Sin and nearly brought the world to ruin. She was ultimately sealed by the combined strength of the Dragon, the first Sword Saint, and the Sage, remaining imprisoned in the eastern dunes where heavy miasma blocks entry.
Relationships
Satella holds an intense love for Natsuki Subaru, wishing for him to eventually come and kill her. Historically, she was friends with the other Witches of Sin—including Echidna, Minerva, Sekhmet, Daphne, Typhon, and Carmilla—before consuming them. Her physical appearance bears a striking resemblance to Emilia, sparking questions regarding their underlying connection.
Trivia
Unlike other Witches of Sin whose names derive from mythology or literature, Satella's name breaks the pattern. It is commonly believed to be derived from 'satellite' (referencing the Moon), a motif further reinforced by alternate media referencing Luna, the Roman goddess of the Moon.
