Overview
Puck is a key character from the series Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, serving as the contract spirit and guardian of the heroine Emilia. Usually taking the form of a small, cat-like mascot small enough to sit on a palm, he stays close by Emilia's side to offer support and guidance. Despite his cheerful and adorable appearance, he is actually a formidable Great Spirit of Fire possessing immense magical capability, playing a crucial role across the main story and its various animated adaptations.
Appearance
Puck resembles a tiny, bipedal kitten small enough to fit within the palm of a hand. He is covered in gray fur with a white belly, accompanied by round eyes, a pink nose, and a long tail. In his day-to-day interactions, he is frequently seen levitating in mid-air or perching directly on Emilia's shoulder.
Personality
Puck maintains a cheerful, relaxed, and playful demeanor, interacting with those around him in a lighthearted fashion. He enjoys teasing Natsuki Subaru and behaves affectionately toward Beatrice as if she were a younger sister. Above all else, he harbors intense, paternal devotion toward Emilia, prioritizing her safety and happiness over everything. To conserve his magical energy, he strictly adheres to a regular daily routine, returning to his crystal gem every evening to rest until morning.
Abilities
Puck is an Artificial Spirit created by Echidna who holds the status of the Great Spirit of Fire. Because maintaining his physical form consumes substantial mana, he relies on a crystal stone vessel and can only remain active during specific daytime hours. Should Emilia perish, his contract obligates him to transform into his true, terrifying form known as the Beast of the End. In this massive, quadrupedal state, he loses his normal persona and unleashes an apocalyptic blizzard capable of freezing the entire surrounding world.
Background
Created in the past by the Witch Echidna, Puck eventually encountered Emilia and forged a spirit contract with her, dedicating himself to being her companion and protector. Their shared origin and early relationship are depicted in detail in prequel works such as Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World: The Frozen Bond. Throughout the main narrative, he travels alongside Emilia as her faithful guardian, assisting her through political turmoil and dangerous encounters.
Relationships
Puck treats Emilia with unconditional paternal affection, addressing her with pet names and protecting her fiercely. He maintains a friendly, teasing relationship with Natsuki Subaru. Toward Beatrice, he displays a fond, elder-brotherly attitude, treating her like a beloved younger sister. He also shares a deep historical connection with his creator, the Witch Echidna.
Trivia
Because Puck operates only during standard daylight hours and retreats into his crystal at night, he is humorously likened to a routine office worker following a 9-to-5 schedule. The stark contrast between his adorable daily appearance and his world-ending true form remains one of his defining character traits.
