Overview
A character from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. Originally an unsuccessful traveling merchant operating in the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica, he later becomes the primary administrative official for the Emilia camp. After being drawn into the conflict surrounding the White Whale through his encounter with Natsuki Subaru, he officially joins Emilia's faction. Serving as the pragmatic voice of reason and straight man among the group's eccentric members, he handles internal affairs and negotiations while offering vital strategic support behind the scenes.
Appearance
He is a young man with grey hair and blue eyes, possessing a medium frame that is slightly slimmer than Natsuki Subaru's. His attire includes long sleeves, a green cloak, a red bow, and a hat adorned with a feather. While his facial expressions are frequently flustered or anxious, he displays a sweet, maiden-like smile when laughing genuinely.
Personality
Although he views situations through a practical and calculating lens, he is fundamentally kind-hearted and easily moved by emotion. As one of the few sensible figures in his group, he frequently takes on the role of the stressed straight man and gets teased for his dramatic reactions. Having endured a lifetime of persistent bad luck, he has developed a surprisingly resilient and stubborn streak. He values friendship deeply and demonstrates remarkable bravery when protecting his allies.
Abilities
He possesses the rare Divine Protection of Soul Language, an acquired ability allowing him to converse with any vocal creature to gather intelligence or request assistance, though overuse places severe physical strain on his body. He is trained in the Suwen family's martial arts, giving him enough hand-to-hand combat proficiency to overpower Natsuki Subaru. Additionally, he can cast Earth Magic, such as the Dona spell series to conjure defensive soil barriers, and exhibits high proficiency in negotiation and administrative management.
Background
Due to his unique gift, he struggled to communicate during early childhood until his parents helped him learn to speak and write. At age fifteen, after exposing a noblewoman's scandal following a violent confrontation, he was forced to flee his hometown to escape an assassin. He became a traveling merchant, eventually landing in financial trouble with an unsold stock of oil. His life changed dramatically when Natsuki Subaru sought out his oil during the White Whale conflict, ultimately leading him to join the Emilia camp as their internal affairs officer.
Relationships
He shares a close, equal friendship with Natsuki Subaru; despite their constant bickering, he understands Subaru's emotional vulnerabilities and acts as his steadfast support. He serves Emilia loyally, empathizing with her social isolation due to his own childhood experiences. He has built mutual trust with Garfiel Tinsel and Ram through hard-fought battles. Additionally, he relies heavily on his loyal ground dragon, Frufo, who accompanies him during his travels and missions.
Trivia
Because his divine protection allowed him to speak with animals, his very first romantic crush was a cat, though he was rejected since the cat did not view him in a romantic light. Despite ranking high in official popularity polls conducted by the author, he is ironically often omitted from official merchandise lines, mirroring his unfortunate luck within the story.
