Overview
Mejiro Ryan is a character in the Umamusume: Pretty Derby franchise. Although raised in the prestigious Mejiro family, she is a down-to-earth, athletic horse girl with a refreshingly bright demeanor. Residing in the Miho Dormitory alongside her roommate Ines Fujin, she dedicates herself to physical training while striving to catch up to her childhood friend and rival, Mejiro McQueen.
Appearance
Mejiro Ryan has dark brown hair in a very short crop featuring a wide white streak running from her front hair toward the back, alongside gray eyes, horse ears with an earring, and a horse tail. Her primary racing outfit, Straight Line, is a green-and-white pinstriped baseball-style shirt tied above her stomach, bold letters spelling Ryan across her chest, and black shorts. In her Margaret Latte attire, she wears a crisp, male-café-master-inspired suit topped with a floral hair accessory. Outside of racing, her casual outfit features accessories such as rings and a necklace.
Personality
She possesses a bright, cheerful, and highly athletic personality with a passion for weight training. Resilient by nature, she channels the frustration of defeat into motivation for her next race. Despite her tough exterior, she harbors a delicate, feminine side; she secretly loves reading shoujo manga and wishes she could wear frilly, cute clothes, though her bashfulness holds her back. To boost her morale, she often relies on muscle-focused self-pep talks.
Abilities
She specializes in medium-distance races and shows strong performance on heavy track conditions, typically employing a late-surging betweener strategy. Her unique skill, Let's Anabolic!, boosts her acceleration when she launches an attack from the middle or lower pack at a late-race corner. When trained for major competitions, she is frequently challenged by long-distance events that demand careful stamina management.
Background
Raised as a daughter of the distinguished Mejiro household, she entered Tracen Academy carrying high expectations. Throughout her racing career, she faces fierce rivals in Classic and senior-grade competitions, constantly learning from her close losses. Overcoming her inner conflict regarding Mejiro McQueen's dominance and taking inspiration from legendary runners like Oguri Cap, she pushes herself toward top-tier victory.
Relationships
She shares a close bond and a mutual love of baseball with her childhood friend Mejiro McQueen, even as she feels intimidated by McQueen's natural nobility and speed. As a senior, she acts as a supportive guide to Mejiro Dober and Mejiro Bright. She is best friends with her roommate Ines Fujin and holds deep admiration for her senior, Oguri Cap.
Trivia
Her ultra-short hairstyle derives from the real-life racehorse's Ryan Cut, which resulted from a mane trimming to treat a skin condition. Her pinstriped outfit draws visual cues from baseball uniforms and traditional racing silks. She makes it a rule to re-read an entire shoujo manga series whenever a new volume is released, and she carries a specialized tail towel due to her frequent sweating.
