Overview

Tokai Teio is a prominent character in the Umamusume Pretty Derby multimedia franchise, serving as the main protagonist of the animated series' second season. She deeply admires Tracen Academy's student council president, Symboli Rudolf—known as the Emperor—and strives to follow in her footsteps by achieving an undefeated Triple Crown. Characterized by her bright, cheerful attitude and Supreme self-confidence, she is well known on the turf for her unique, springy gait termed the Teio Step.

Appearance

Tokai Teio has long brown hair styled in a ponytail tied with a pink ribbon, featuring a distinct white streak in her forelock, and blue eyes. She wears an ornament on her right ear. Her primary racing outfit, Top of Joyful, is a royal-inspired white attire paired with knee-high white boots and asymmetrical gloves—white on her right hand and dark navy on her left. Her alternative racing gear includes Beyond the Horizon, a phoenix-themed outfit with prominent red accenting, and the Shuin no Yumemitori set, a Japanese ceremonial costume in pale purple and white.

Personality

Tokai Teio is an upbeat, energetic girl who uses the masculine personal pronoun boku. Extremely confident in her racing capabilities, she exhibits a slightly cheeky and competitive streak, hating to lose or admit defeat. Despite her headstrong demeanour, she possesses an honest and warm heart, readily apologizing whenever she realizes she is in the wrong. She has a deep fondess for honey drinks and tends to excitedly wag her tail when receiving attention.

Abilities

Tokai Teio boasts exceptional physical flexibility, holding a record for the sit-and-reach stretch. Her extreme joint suppleness enables her signature Teio Step, a highly elastic, springy movement style. This flexibility gives her extraordinary speed, agility, and dynamic footwork on the track, making her particularly skilled at tackling steep uphill slopes during races.

Background

After enrolling at Tracen Academy, Tokai Teio launches her career aiming for an undefeated Triple Crown. She triumphantly claims victories in both the Satsuki Sho and the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby). However, her supreme flexibility contributes to a severe fracture that forces her to skip the Kikuka Sho, shattering her Triple Crown ambition. Her career subsequently becomes plagued by repeated bone fractures and heartbreaking setbacks. Following a third severe fracture that compromises her top speed, she considers retirement, but is inspired to return by the unwavering support of her peers. After a full year of rehabilitation, she makes a legendary comeback by winning the Arima Kinen.

Relationships

Tokai Teio deeply reveres the student council president, Symboli Rudolf, looking up to her as an ultimate role model. She shares an intense rivalry and close friendship with Mejiro McQueen, with both pushing each other to perform at their absolute limits. Her assigned Tracen Academy dormitory roommate is Mayano Top Gun. She also shares meaningful bonds with peers like Twin Turbo, Kitasan Black, and Nice Nature, whose dedication helps motivate her during her darkest moments.

Trivia

Her real-life namesake, Tokai Teio, was a famous Japanese racehorse sired by Symboli Rudolf, celebrated for winning the 1993 Arima Kinen after a year-long hiatus due to injury. The asymmetrical color scheme of her Top of Joyful costume—having different colored gloves and a single white boot pattern—is a design nod to the real horse having a white marking on only one of its front legs.
