Overview
A spirit appearing in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. For hundreds of years, she served as the librarian of the Forbidden Library hidden within the Roswaal L. Mathers mansion. Although she has the physical appearance of a young girl, she is actually an artificial spirit who has lived for more than four centuries. She eventually forms a binding spirit contract with Natsuki Subaru, leaving her secluded library behind to become his central partner and combat companion.
Appearance
With a physical appearance of an eleven-to-twelve-year-old girl and a height of 140 centimeters, she features long blonde hair styled into twin drills along with parted bangs and sidelocks. Her blue eyes contain distinct butterfly-shaped irises. She wears a mini crown, pink ribbons adorning her hair, neck, and dress, a red capelet with fur trim, and a frilled red dress with wide sleeves. She wears striped thighhighs and is frequently seen holding a heavy book.
Personality
Referring to herself in the third person as Betty, she presents a haughty, blunt, and stubborn front. Beneath her sharp tongue lies a deeply tender and lonely nature. Centuries of solitary isolation left her resigned and emotionally detached from outside conflicts. Initially, she avoided calling most individuals by their names. After forming a contract with Natsuki Subaru, however, her disposition warms greatly; she places unwavering trust in him, acts affectionately, and regularly demands physical affection, though she remains averse to strangers invading her personal space.
Abilities
She is a master of Yin magic, capable of manipulating spatial connections via her Door Crossing technique and casting powerful lost spells. Within the domain of the Forbidden Library inside the Roswaal mansion, her magical strength is vast enough to contend directly with Roswaal L. Mathers. However, once she departs from the library's sphere of influence, her magic becomes severely restricted, resulting in a drastic decrease in her combat effectiveness.
Background
Created by Echidna, the Witch of Greed, as an artificial spirit, she regards her creator as her mother. For over four hundred years, she remained isolated inside the Forbidden Library of the Roswaal mansion. When an attack by Elsa Granhiert led to the destruction of her library, Natsuki Subaru desperately implored her to choose a future alongside him. Reaching out to accept his hand, she ended her centuries-long solitary duty, forged a spirit contract with him, and assisted in defeating the Great Rabbit. She subsequently travels as his spirit partner.
Relationships
She shares a profound bond with Natsuki Subaru as his spirit partner, treating him as cherished family. She holds affection for Puck, Emilia's spirit, calling him her big brother. While initially distant toward Emilia, she begins addressing her by name after contracting with Subaru. She reveres her creator, Echidna the Witch of Greed, as her mother, maintains a long relationship with Roswaal L. Mathers, and fought against Elsa Granhiert when her library was attacked.
Trivia
Official lore notes her weight as being heavier than a Koujien dictionary. Her youthful appearance and close partnership with Natsuki Subaru led to him receiving the epithet Child User from those around them. During a tenth-anniversary stream, the author named the pivotal line where Subaru asks her to choose him as a favorite scene, leading to March 17—its original broadcast date—being established as her official character anniversary.
