Blastoise is the Shell Pokémon and the final Water-type evolution of the Kanto region's starter line, evolving from Wartortle. Listed as entry #0009 in the National Pokédex, it famously served as the cover mascot for Pokémon Blue. Characterized by the twin water cannons mounted on its heavy shell, Blastoise combines a solid defensive posture with powerful long-range pressure. Despite its tough appearance, it possesses a calm, gentle nature, making it a reliable partner both in formal Battles and practical human aid work such as firefighting.
Appearance
Blastoise is a large tortoise-like creature with blue skin that stands on two legs but can move on four. It features a cream-colored lower jaw, triangular ears, visible teeth, and short, thick segmented limbs ending in three toes, along with a thick blue tail. Its heavy shell has a brown upper surface, a pale yellow underside, and a white rim. Retractable twin metal cannons project from the upper shell. Upon Mega Evolving, it develops red eyes, a pointed chin, a forehead bump, thicker limbs, small shells with cannons on each arm, and one massive central back cannon extending past its head. Shiny variants feature purple skin and a dark green shell.
Personality
Despite its imposing size and stern facial features, Blastoise possesses a calm and gentle disposition. It is remarkably accommodating toward humans and other creatures, serving as a steadfast, dependable companion in battle. Exhibiting exceptional self-control, it can finely adjust its high-pressure water output, allowing it to assist helpfully in domestic tasks like watering flowers or organized emergency efforts like firefighting. Its adaptable and steady demeanor enables it to fit comfortably into various supportive and defensive combat roles.
Abilities
Blastoise excels in physical and special defense. Its signature back cannons launch high-pressure water streams like Hydro Pump capable of puncturing solid steel plates or hitting a target fifty meters away with precision, as well as elemental rays like Ice Beam and pulse attacks. By expelling water from its shell's leg openings, it executes Rapid Spin or propels itself through the air. It utilizes its durable shell for moves such as Shell Smash and Iron Defense, while also mastering physical strikes like Body Slam. Its innate abilities include Torrent and Rain Dish, shifting to Mega Launcher upon Mega Evolution.
Background
Originating in the Kanto region, wild Blastoise are notably rare, preferring freshwater lakes and ponds while occasionally frequenting island beaches in marine waters. It begins its life cycle as Squirtle before reaching its intermediate form, Wartortle, eventually attaining its final evolution at level 36. Introduced in the initial generation of the franchise, it has maintained a prominent presence across main series titles and spin-offs, frequently serving as an essential team member for key trainers and a featured opponent in major regional competitions.
Relationships
Blastoise forms strong bonds with numerous prominent Pokémon trainers. It serves as a formidable team member for notable Kanto figures including Red, Green, and Blue, as well as Gym Leader Misty. Furthermore, it is deployed in battle by key trainers across other regions, such as Professor Sycamore in Kalos, Gladion in Alola, Mitsuba at the Master Dojo, and Dawn from Sandgem Town, highlighting its widespread popularity among skilled battlers.
Trivia
The Japanese name Kamex derives from kame (turtle) combined with max or the Latin rex (king), while its English name Blastoise blends blast with tortoise. For nearly a decade starting with the Nintendo 3DS titles, main series 3D battle models rendered water attacks coming from its mouth rather than its cannons, a quirk later resolved with dedicated cannon-firing animations. Additionally, Blastoise possesses a Gigantamax transformation that manifests a fortress-like shell mounting thirty-one cannons.
