Smearguru

Overview

Smearguru is a specialized Smeargle who appears in Pokémon Pokopia, identified in-game as "Smearguru" and known in Japanese as "ドーブルせんせい." Functioning as an item customization non-player character, he utilizes the brush on his tail to apply custom colors and pattern designs to items provided by the player. Unlike standard members of his species, he possesses an intense passion for artistic creation and serves as a dedicated craftsperson.

Appearance

Smearguru features an oversized brush tip on his tail that is stained with multiple colors rather than a single shade. Splatters of colorful paint are scattered across his body, and a painted pattern resembling a mustache is drawn onto his face. When heavily focused on creating art, his eyes become visibly bloodshot.

Personality

Smearguru is driven by an intense passion for art, prioritizing bursts of inspiration over basic needs like eating, even when starving. When struck by a creative urge, he demonstrates high-energy behavior and speaks of fate compelling him to create. Despite his fierce focus while working, he also exhibits a whimsical nature, wandering away from his atelier once a designated living space is assigned to him.

Abilities

Smearguru has the ability to redecorate colorable items by applying various patterns and colors. By receiving pigments crafted from crushed ingredients alongside specific items, he uses his enlarged tail brush to paint and customize their outer appearance.

Background

Upon initial encounter, Smearguru resides near a canvas inside a sheltered building, though he is technically classified as having no established habitat. Relocating a nearby chair directly in front of his canvas configures the area into his personal living space. Notably, he is the only Pokémon with a distinct unique design in Pokémon Pokopia who does not participate in the main story arc.

Relationships

Smearguru interacts with the player primarily in a functional role as a paint vendor and artisan who customizes provided gear. Although he lacks dedicated narrative ties to other main characters, he aligns with the recurring archetype of artistic Pokémon found throughout the franchise.

Trivia

During early game development, the draft name considered for the Smeargle species was "Painter." Furthermore, collecting the side table situated near Smearguru's workstation and arranging it together with a beach umbrella and a beach chair creates a unique habitat capable of attracting all three forms of Tatsugiri.
