Bonnie

Overview

Bonnie is a prominent character introduced in the video games Pokémon X and Y and featured as a main companion in Pokémon the Series: XY. She is the younger sister of Clemont, the Electric-type Gym Leader of Lumiose City. Traveling through the Kalos region alongside her brother, Ash Ketchum, and Serena, Bonnie is not yet old enough to be an official Pokémon Trainer. Despite this limitation, she displays an immense passion for Pokémon, asking her older brother to temporarily keep Pokémon for her until she reaches the age to begin her own journey.

Appearance

Bonnie has short blonde hair, braided across the left side of her forehead and secured on the right with an oval clip, along with blue eyes. Her primary attire consists of a brown sleeveless top, a white skirt, black spats, and pink strap shoes worn barefoot. She carries a yellow shoulder pochette. Her sleepwear is designed after Tyrantrum. She also possesses outfits and accessories modeled after specific Pokémon, including a Snubbull-inspired apron, Slowbro and Ducklett swimsuits, a Chimecho furisode, Delibird winter clothing, a Nurse Joy outfit, as well as a Sentret hairbrush, Poliwag hand mirror, and Nosepass canteen.

Personality

Bonnie is an energetic, upbeat, and dependable young girl who often displays more composure and practical awareness than her older brother, Clemont. She frequently teases her brother about the straightforward naming of his inventions and takes it upon herself to find him a wife, impishly asking attractive older women to take care of him, much to his embarrassment. She is remarkably fearless and affectionate toward all Pokémon, regardless of their species or intimidating appearance. Despite her young age, Bonnie possesses extraordinary physical endurance, effortlessly climbing cliffs and traversing rough terrain, though she harbors minor dislikes such as thunder and eating carrots.

Abilities

In the video games, Bonnie hosts a silhouette identification quiz for challengers at the Lumiose Gym and awards the Affection Ribbon to Pokémon that have bonded deeply with their trainers. In the animated series, although not yet an official trainer, she demonstrates the ability to command Pokémon such as Dedenne and Bunnelby in battle during emergencies. She also possesses exceptional physical capability, including barehanded cliff climbing and natural riding talent demonstrated during a Skiddo race, as well as the knowledge needed to tend to injured wild Pokémon.

Background

Hailing from Lumiose City in the Kalos region, Bonnie originally lived with her brother Clemont at the Lumiose Gym. After meeting Ash Ketchum and Serena, she joined them on a journey across Kalos. Because she is too young to officially own Pokémon, her brother temporarily holds Dedenne for her, which she carries everywhere. During their travels, Bonnie encounters a mysterious Zygarde Core she names Squishy, forming a profound bond with it and risking her safety to protect it from Team Flare's ambitions. Rumors in later eras suggest that she eventually earned a reputation in Lumiose City as a Quiz Queen.

Relationships

Bonnie shares a deep sibling bond with her older brother, Clemont, constantly looking out for him and trying to find him a suitable wife while encouraging his efforts as a Gym Leader. She forms an instant friendship with Ash Ketchum after being playfully shocked by his Pikachu upon their first meeting. She is particularly close with Serena, acting like a younger sister to her and having been the one to initially invite Serena to join the group. Bonnie also holds immense affection for Dedenne and the Zygarde Core named Squishy, fiercely protecting them whenever danger arises.

Trivia

Bonnie's Japanese name, Eureka, is derived from Archimedes' famous exclamation upon discovering the principle of buoyancy, as well as a variety of lemon. In the alternate Mirror World featured in the anime, her counterpart possesses an arrogant personality who addresses everyone with formal titles. Team Rocket often refers to her by the nickname Kojari-girl or Little Jari-girl. Additionally, her distinct Tyrantrum pajamas left a strong impression on fans, adding a memorable touch to her character design.
