Overview
Xerneas is a Legendary Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Pokémon X and Y, serving as the version mascot for Pokémon X. Classified as the Life Pokémon, it stands as the counterpart to Yveltal within the Kalos region's ecosystem, embodying the principles of life and rebirth. It possesses vast life energy, which it can bestow upon its surroundings to share vitality and endless longevity.
Appearance
Resembling a large stag, Xerneas has a body predominantly colored in blue and black, with X-shaped pupils set inside its blue eyes. It features large, intricate antler-like branches atop its head. During combat, it takes on its Active Mode, where its antlers shine in multiple vivid colors and sparkling patterns appear on its back. In its non-combat Neutral Mode, the yellow highlights fade into pale light-blue hues, and the vibrant glow of its antlers disappears. When entering its 1,000-year slumber, it transforms into a dried tree bearing an X-shaped marking. Its shiny variant replaces the black sections of its body with white.
Personality
Xerneas naturally exudes a benevolent demeanor, freely bestowing energy upon the living beings and flora around it. However, the overwhelming magnitude of its power can inadvertently distort the nature of those affected by it. Though its physical design lacks a distinct mouth, it displays a gentle nature that remains open to accepting food offered by humans.
Abilities
When its antlers glow with brilliant spectral light, Xerneas can share endless life and restore immense vitality to nearby creatures and environment. At the end of its 1,000-year active cycle, it releases its remaining energy before entering a 1,000-year hibernation as a dormant tree. It does not require sustenance through eating. Its ability, Fairy Aura, boosts the power of Fairy-type attacks for all combatants on the field. Its signature status move, Geomancy, allows it to charge energy to drastically raise its offensive and mobility capabilities. It also utilizes attacks such as Moonblast and Horn Leech.
Background
Historical records note its appearance in the Kalos region 800 years ago, though it has cycled between activity and hibernation for far longer. Its life-giving forces were also tied to major events 3,000 years in the past. In modern times, Team Flare's leader, Lysandre, sought to exploit its infinite energy, capturing Xerneas in its dormant tree state to power an ultimate weapon. It is subsequently reawakened and freed during the intervention of the protagonist.
Relationships
Xerneas serves as the direct counterpart to Yveltal, representing the bestowal of life against Yveltal's nature of taking it away. Lysandre, the boss of Team Flare, views Xerneas as a vessel of energy to fuel his ambitions. Throughout various conflicts, it forms connections with trainers such as Calme, Serena, and Y, who interact with it during the events surrounding Team Flare.
Trivia
Its name is believed to combine the letter X with elements derived from the Latin word for stag ('cervus'), the Ceryneian Hind of Greek mythology, and the Celtic deity Cernunnos. Design inspirations are thought to trace back to Eikþyrnir and the World Tree concept from Norse mythology.
