Overview
Chespin is a Grass-type starter Pokémon originating from the Kalos region, first introduced in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Designated as number 0650 in the National Pokédex, it is chosen alongside Fennekin and Froakie at the beginning of a player's journey. Chespin evolves into Quilladin and eventually into Chesnaught. Recognized by its bipedal, mammal-like design, it serves as a prominent figure across core games, animated adaptations, and various spin-off titles.
Appearance
Chespin is a bipedal, mammalian Pokémon incorporating visual elements of a hedgehog, echidna, and green chestnut husk. Its head and back are protected by a hard, bark-like green shell, which features a distinct circular hole pattern on the rear left side of its head. It possesses prominent front buck teeth, soft spikes atop its head, claws, and a tail. In its shiny variant, the green shell turns brown, while its nose and tail tip take on a yellow hue.
Personality
Chespin is defined by its vibrant curiosity, which frequently leads it into unexpected mishaps and complications. Despite regularly getting involved in trouble, its formidable physical defenses allow it to maintain an easygoing, resilient temperament, brushing off minor setbacks without worry.
Abilities
As a pure Grass-type Pokémon, Chespin possesses the Overgrow ability, as well as the hidden ability Bulletproof, which negates projectile and explosive attacks. The soft spikes on its head harden into sharp points capable of piercing solid rock when concentrating energy. Its shock-absorbing bark shell can shield it from extreme impacts, including vehicle collisions. By consuming berries, it fortifies its armor and spikes. In battle, it utilizes moves such as Vine Whip, Seed Bomb, Take Down, Gyro Ball, Body Slam, and Wood Hammer.
Background
Chespin naturally inhabits forested areas, where it spends its time foraging for berries. In the video games Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, it is provided to starting trainers in Aquacorde Town by Tierno as one of the Kalos region's primary partner choices. Beyond the main series games, it features prominently across various adaptations, appearing as a key companion to major figures in both the animated series and manga narratives.
Relationships
Chespin forms an iconic trio alongside Fennekin and Froakie as the Kalos starter Pokémon. In the core games, it serves as a partner to rivals Calem, Serena, and Shauna depending on the player's initial selection. In the animated series, notable trainers include Lumiose Gym Leader Clemont and trainer Mairin, who nicknames her Chespin "Chespie". In the Pokémon Adventures manga, it belongs to the protagonist X under the nickname "Mariso".
Trivia
The name Chespin is derived from a blend of "chestnut" and "pin", mirroring its Japanese name Harimaron, which combines "hari" (needle) and the French word for chestnut, "marron". As part of the Pokémon Local Acts initiative, Chespin is featured on an official commemorative manhole cover ("Pokéfuta") located in Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture, alongside Chansey, Chimecho, and Farfetch'd. Additionally, Chespin appears as a Poké Ball item summon in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, assisting players by launching Seed Bomb attacks.
