Overview
Bunnelby is a Normal-type Pokémon classified as the Digging Pokémon, first introduced in Generation VI with Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Serving as a classic early-game encounter, it represents the foundational rabbit-like creature of its debut region. It eventually evolves into Diggersby, gaining the Ground type upon evolution. Designed with a cartoonish lagomorph aesthetic, Bunnelby functions as an adaptable companion for trainers in the early stages of their adventure and has made prominent appearances across various main series games, spin-offs, and animated adaptations.
Appearance
Bunnelby has a bipedal silhouette resembling a grey rabbit. Its most prominent physical trait is a pair of large ears, which are colored dark brown at their tips. In its shiny coloration, the brown sections on its ears turn white, and its eyes become bright red while the rest of its body retains its grey fur.
Personality
Bunnelby possesses a highly cautious nature driven by sharp survival instincts. In regions like Galar, it remains constantly alert to natural predators such as Corviknight, instantly digging into the earth to retreat the moment it catches the sound of flapping wings. Despite this timid demeanor in the wild, it can display a friendly and supportive personality around companions, occasionally demonstrating lighthearted greed for food or attempting to cheer up downhearted fellow Pokémon.
Abilities
Using its sturdy ears, Bunnelby can slice through stubborn tree roots and excavate underground burrows up to ten meters deep within a single night. Its standard abilities include Pickup and Cheek Pouch, alongside the hidden ability Huge Power. In combat and field traversal, it can master Ground-type techniques like Dig, Bulldoze, and Earthquake, as well as utility moves such as Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, and Surf.
Background
Introduced in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y along early travel routes and via in-game NPC trades, Bunnelby has consistently served as an accessible early-game partner. Its presence continues across later titles, appearing in the Wild Area of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield and serving as a tutorial capture in Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A. In the animated series, it features prominently as one of Clemont's core Pokémon in Kalos, engaging in battles against Ash's Pikachu, and is later captured by Goh in Pokémon Journeys after stealing a scone.
Relationships
In the animated series, Bunnelby shares a strong bond of mutual trust with Clemont, serving as one of his primary battling companions throughout the Kalos region. It later comes under the care of Goh after being caught in the Galar region. From an ecological perspective, it views the heavy bird Pokémon Corviknight as its natural predator. Upon reaching level 20, Bunnelby evolves directly into Diggersby.
Trivia
Its Japanese name Horubee is derived from a combination of the word for dig (horu), hole, rabbit, and bilby. The English name Bunnelby blends bunny with tunnel. In real-world local promotions, Bunnelby is featured on an official Pokémon utility hole cover in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, installed alongside Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew in reference to the famous local legend of the White Rabbit of Inaba.
