Overview

Gourgeist is a Ghost/Grass-type Pumpkin Pokémon introduced in Generation VI with Pokémon X and Y. Evolving from Pumpkaboo via trading, it serves as a counterpart to Trevenant. Designed around a Halloween theme, Gourgeist combines a jack-o'-lantern lower half with a humanoid, feminine upper silhouette. It exists in four distinct size varieties ranging from Small Size to Super Size, each possessing different physical proportions and hunting habits.

Appearance

Gourgeist features a black jack-o'-lantern lower body with face-shaped apertures that glow like a lamp in the dark. Extending upward is a dull, stem-like neck and a physical-less upper body. Long, salmon-pink hair acts as its arms, with one side veiling one of its glowing yellow eyes. It features a single fang and an ahoge-like stem atop its head. The species spans four size categories—Small, Average, Large, and Super—with heights ranging from 0.7 to 1.7 meters and weights from 9.5 to 39.0 kilograms. In shiny individuals, the pink hair turns purple and the glowing accents turn yellow-green.

Personality

Despite its charming exterior, Gourgeist exhibits a thoroughly cruel demeanor. Active primarily on moonless nights, it wanders human settlements singing cursed melodies while eerie wails of the dead echo from its body. It takes pleasure in capturing people with its hair-like arms, constricting them tightly while singing joyfully as it watches its victims writhe in agony. Legends claim it knocks on residential doors to drag whoever opens them to the afterlife. Its methods of deception vary by size: smaller ones pretend to be children to deceive adults, whereas larger ones impersonate adults to abduct children.

Abilities

Gourgeist possesses the abilities Frisk and Pickup, with Insomnia as its hidden ability. Its signature move, Trick-or-Treat, grants the Ghost typing to its target. In battle, its consistently high Defense allows it to act as a resilient physical wall. Its moveset features heavy-hitting attacks like Power Whip and Poltergeist, priority techniques such as Shadow Sneak, status moves like Will-O-Wisp, and self-sacrificing moves like Explosion. Unusually for a Grass-type, it can also use Fire-type attacks such as Flamethrower and Fire Blast. Its stat distribution scales with size: smaller variants gain higher Speed, while larger forms possess greater HP and Attack.

Background

Gourgeist debuted in Generation VI's Kalos region, where it serves as one of the Pokémon used by Champion Diantha. It continues to appear in subsequent titles such as Pokémon Sword and Shield as well as Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, with certain titles updating its form names and Pokédex descriptions. In the animated series Pokémon XY, Team Rocket member Jessie possessed a Super Size Gourgeist that evolved from her Pumpkaboo after a trade, remaining a frequent battle partner throughout her travels.

Relationships

Gourgeist evolves directly from Pumpkaboo when traded. It is considered a counterpart to Trevenant, another Ghost/Grass-type introduced in the same generation. Notable trainers who command Gourgeist include Kalos Champion Diantha, Muku of the Justice Gang, and Crocea in the Pokémon Adventures manga. Additionally, in Pokémon Masters EX, a Super Size Gourgeist forms a sync pair with the Galar Gym Leader Allister.

Trivia

The Japanese name Pumpjin combines the English word "pumpkin" with "Djinn," a spirit from Middle Eastern folklore. Its English name, Gourgeist, merges "gourd" with "geist," the German word for ghost or spirit. In-game petability features reflect its lore by making its ethereal upper body impossible to physically touch, though the Pokémon still feels the interaction. Due to its strong association with jack-o'-lanterns, it is a very common subject for fan art during the Halloween season.
