Overview
Volcanion is a Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VI of the Pokémon series. Classified as the Steam Pokémon with National Pokédex number 0721, it is famous for possessing the franchise's first combined Fire and Water typing. It plays a central role as a featured Pokémon in the animated film Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.
Appearance
Volcanion is a maroon, quadrupedal Pokémon featuring blue eyes, yellow eyebrow-like markings, and yellow and blue patterns across its body. Its most distinctive physical feature is a pair of hose-like arm cannons mounted on its back that typically join together to form a ring. When the water reserves inside its body are exhausted, the blue markings on its arm cannons turn red.
Personality
Volcanion has a stubborn and gruff personality, harbouring deep distrust toward humans due to their history of harming Pokémon and telling lies. Expressing itself through harsh and blunt telepathic dialogue, it even views Pokémon aligned with humans as foolish. Beneath its rugged demeanor, however, lies a gentle and protective heart that shelters injured Pokémon, and it shows enough flexibility to yield when reprimanded by those it holds dear.
Abilities
Volcanion possesses the unique Fire/Water dual typing and the Water Absorb Ability, making it immune to Water-type attacks. By drawing in water through its back arms and superheating it internally into explosive steam, it can unleash shockwaves powerful enough to blast away forests and alter entire landscapes. Beyond its signature move Steam Eruption, it can fire water jets, create thick fog to hide itself, and achieve brief flight using water pressure. Because its body cannot produce cold air, it cannot learn Ice-type moves, with the exception of Haze and Mist.
Background
Folklore in southwestern Kalos worships Volcanion as a land-shaping entity whose powerful steam explosions created the plains. For over 500 years, it hid within dense fog at the remote Nebel Plateau, coexisting with injured wild Pokémon. In the theatrical movie, Volcanion sets out to rescue Magearna from human captors and becomes magnetically bound to Ash Ketchum, obligating the two to work together despite Volcanion's reluctance.
Relationships
Volcanion shares a profound bond with Magearna, having lived with her for centuries at the Nebel Plateau; it protects her fiercely while responding submissively to her soft-spoken warnings. Though initially expressing contempt and coarse language toward Ash Ketchum, Volcanion gradually builds mutual trust with him during their rescue efforts. In Pokémon Masters EX, it is paired with Lysandre.
Trivia
Its name is believed to originate from a blend of the English word 'volcano' and the Spanish word 'cañón', meaning cannon or tube. Its Shiny variant transforms its overall color scheme into an extravagant gold. Additionally, Volcanion is notable among Mythical Pokémon for naturally learning the move Explosion through leveling up.
