Overview

Diancie is a Mythical Rock/Fairy-type Jewel Pokémon introduced in Generation VI of the main Pokémon series (Pokémon X and Y). It serves as the titular star of the movie Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. Originating as a sudden mutation of Carbink, it is depicted across media as a refined princess or queen ruling over subterranean colonies of Carbink. Renowned as one of the most beautiful Pokémon in existence, it boasts a striking, gem-adorned design.

Appearance

Diancie possesses a humanoid upper body clad in a white jacket-like coat of fur and a lower body composed of rough gray rock embedded with a large pink diamond. It features purple skin, pink eyes with red sclerae, and cat-ear-like protrusions on its head. Its crown is dominated by a large, brilliant-cut pink diamond, flanked by pink gem-like crystal formations extending behind its head like twintails. When it Mega Evolves, it transforms into Mega Diancie. In its Shiny form, its upper body garment shifts to a deep pink coloration while its gems retain a similar hue.

Personality

Revered as royalty among Carbink, Diancie exhibits a polite, refined demeanor suited to a princess. In animated depictions, it uses telepathy to communicate in a gentle, highly courteous tone. Although somewhat naive regarding the surface world, it possesses a deep sense of responsibility toward its subjects and kingdom. It also carries a playful vanity, taking pride in its splendor and striving to shine brighter when admired by others.

Abilities

Diancie possesses the unique ability to compress atmospheric carbon between its hands to instantly generate vast quantities of pink diamonds. This power feeds into its signature move, Diamond Storm. However, diamonds produced hastily or by an inexperienced individual quickly decompose back into carbon. In battle, it possesses the Clear Body Ability and can learn moves such as Power Gem, Play Rough, Body Press, and Flash Cannon. Upon holding Diancite, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Diancie.

Background

Diancie has been recorded since ancient times as an extremely rare mutation born from Carbink colonies. In the main series games, it was primarily distributed through special theater events and distributions, triggering unique scenes where collectors plead with the player to trade it. In Pokémon LEGENDS: Z-A, it becomes catchable in the wild atop a building following an event quest alongside its Carbink guards. In the movie Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, it journeys alongside Ash and his companions to find Xerneas in order to acquire the power to create a lasting Heart Diamond for its realm.

Relationships

Diancie shares a close biological link with Carbink, serving as their natural leader and mutated royal counterpart. In the animated film, it builds a warm friendship with Ash Ketchum, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie. In Pokémon Masters EX, it forms partner sync pairs with Hilbert/Hilda (Hilda) as well as the Kalos Champion Diantha, who commands a Shiny Diancie.

Trivia

The name Diancie is derived from a combination of 'diamant' (French for diamond), 'C' (the chemical symbol for carbon), and 'sidhe' (an Irish Gaelic term for fairy). In Pokémon LEGENDS: Z-A, a portrait of Diancie displayed in the Lumiose Museum appears to parody Johannes Vermeer's famous painting 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' (also known as 'Girl with a Turquoise Turban'), creating a thematic link between the gemstone lapis lazuli used in the original painting's blue turban and Diancie's identity as a Jewel Pokémon.
